Switching to bass.
#1
My steelhead season is done. so im going to start targeting smallies on the snake. i knew there was a ton of chinook smolt headed down the river right now and i talked to a guy that said he caught one on a white crankbait that started spewing dead smolt all over the place once he landed the fish. so i ran to sportsmans warehouse and picked up some white flukes (soft jerk bait.) and headed down to the river. well it was the meal ticket. i picked up 4 fish in about an hour and missed several others. i was fishing them on a weighted swim bait hook 3/0. got them down to the bottom and worked them slow with a couple jerks and long pauses. first smaallies of the season for me. only took a picture of one. they were all around the same size. pic bellow.

by the way im seriously thinking about buying a bass boat ive been wanting to get more serious about bass fishing for a long time now. ive always enjoyed fishing plactics for both large mouth and small mouth. so if anybody knows of any good deals on a boat let me know.

Nice! Looks fun. I may have to do that too! I'm staying in Clarkston for work for the next month or two. I've been catching carp in the evenings, but maybe I'll have to check out the bass fishing! Maybe I'll see you out there...

Your hooked now, poor fella. That's why I gave up salmonids long ago. Try a double fluke rig, you'll find it on youtube. Be careful of used boats, powerheads are 5000 bucks. Bassboats run full blast then get turned off, but man what a rush. Lots of clubs around if you want to get into tourny fishing. Try a staysee 90, makes me pee a little when they wack it. Good luck. . . . . Dale Smile

How do you fish your Staysees? I've tried them the last few springs and have never caught anything on them. I've done well with Jackall Squirrels (my favorite hardbait for smallies), Slender Pointers, Vision 110s, X Raps, but for some reason they won't hit the Staysee for me. Do you fish it with more of a sweeping action, or do you jerk it like any other jerkbait once you get it down to depth?

You need a soft pole with mono, make long casts and reel down fast to get it to dive, then stop. When you can't hardly stand it, wait another minute, reel slow till you feel a wiggle, then jerk, then wait somemore. The jerk you want makes the bait flip around and face the predator in the face. Big bass can't hardly stand it and whack it hard, don't set to fast, usually they kill it then grab it. My biggest LMB out of Owhyee came on Aurora Black 90. 61/2 lbr. Caught several 15lb + bags of smallies at Brownlee too. Have a tourny this weekend at Brownlee and I'm nervous as a whore in church with anticipation. Tight lines. . . . DaleSmile

PS: Staysees and spooks I always fish on Ugly Sticks with mono. The baits cost more than the whole rod/reel combo. lol Something bout the stretch.

Those are some awesome fish. Sounds like I need to slow down some more and really work them more subtly. I have a Fenwick HMG medium light with a moderate fast action that I just love for jerkbaits. It's really light and sensitive, but it has that nice soft bend to it. Things are a bit colder on the east side of the state, but I'm hoping when things finally warm up again next week that the bass will get active. Now I just need to kick this pesky sinus infection before that [:/]

Dale,

I've never heard of the reel down to depth...I'm going to have to try that out next time. I got on sweet susp jerkbait bite earlier this spring on CJ. I thought it was the neatest thing waiting 20-30 seconds on a pause and then just feel one inhale it on a semi-slack line. Got my blood pumping real good. That pause can be agonizing though.

If you don't mind sharing what colors do you prefer of the Staysee?

You might want to think about buying a Jet Boat that is set up for bass fishing . Then you could use it for Steelheading and everything else . A jet boat with a casting platform and electric trolling motor on the front would work great . Curt G.

Aurora Black and American Shad staysees are the bomb. I tried bass fishing out of my jetboat and since it is a sled and really has no keel, IT SUCKED. The wind blew it around in circles like a leaf in the fall wind on a farm pond. Took the motor off and it's for sale, 75 motorguide with wireless remote and long shaft, interested anyone?
