I'm new to the ID board. I could use some advice, please. Grandma and I will be in Boise watching the grandsons at the end of April while their folks go on vacation. Their dad doesn't fish, so I'm gonna take the opportunity to get them started. Any suggestions on community ponds where we could do some bank tangling would be appreciated. I'll be dealing with 3 and 5 year old boys, so action is the key to arouse and keep their interest. Panfish or trout, it doesn't matter, just as long as they are biting. Thanks.

I have heard Park center 385 E PARKCENTER BLVD, in Boise was stocked April 15th with 900 trout. I have never fished it but it's close to downtown and it looks like bank fishing or dock fishing.

I like Parkcenter pond, I have caught trout but there are also supposed to be catfish, bass, and bluegill in there, I think.
The pond on the corner of Eagle and McMillan is quite a bit smaller, but quite fun because you can often see the fish. The green sunfish school and can be seen, but were tiny when I saw them. The trout were gathered near the inlet, and the carp and catfish were in another corner. I need to get out again and see how it is doing.
My wife and I went to Wilson Springs pond in Nampa recently. I've seen bass and catfish and bluegill in the back ponds in the past, but didn't see anything 2 weeks ago. We could see planter trout in the front ponds and caught 4 in the time we were fishing it. I do like the 2 trout limit they are putting on those small ponds (Ryder pond in Idaho Falls has a limit now too). They were getting fished out within days of being stocked.

I would make the same recommendations as hunteroffish but would also include taking a trip over the hill to the Mill pond outside of Horseshoe Bend.... I have been teaching my kids to flyfish over there for about a year and they do quite well.

Riverside Pond....on Glenwood on the northwest side of the Boise River bridge....will be replanted April 22nd. It is definitely put and take so the 450 trout they will plant will not be in there too long!l Power Bait or worms and marshmallows will do the trick. Wilson Pond gets planted most frequently, in that the hatchery is nearby. You can see the planting schedule by going to the Fish and Game site and go to reports--Southwest Idaho--and from there you are a click away. Hope they get into them. Mike

Heh, yeah, I did talk to someone who still thinks there are some in there and I sure hope so. The guys who poached that one are really pretty worthless human beings.
Although, we were watching a video about the Coelacanth the other day and it makes me wonder how they taste. Someone at a hatchery needs to get on that.

Parkcenter Pond can be good, but it's definitely not somewhere you would go to get away. It's right downtown and the traffic noise can be annoying. I'd go check it out a few days in advance too, because when I was there at this time last year there was goose crap everywhere. You could hardly find a place to walk without stepping in it, and it was all over the docks in huge piles. Not something you want little kids getting into.
Wilson Ponds would be my suggestion. It gets planted consistently, and they throw leftover fish from other plantings in as well. It's away from the major roads and there are nice paths to walk on. It's a lot more naturalistic with lots of wildlife to watch. There are four ponds (two with trout, one trophy trout pond that's C&R only and a bass/catfish/sunfish pond) so if fish aren't biting on one pond you can try one of the others.
If you don't mind a bit of a drive, you may want to try Cottonwood Campground at CJ Strike. It's supposed to be warm and sunny all next week, which means the crappie and bluegills will be hitting the canal and boat slip area soon. When they're in, it can be fish on every cast. If the fish aren't biting, Brunau Dunes is nearby so the kids can have fun climbing the dunes and there's a lake there with bluegill and some nice bass.

I would like to try sturgeon some time, but what I'm talking about is the Coelacanth. Thought to be extinct until a dead one was found in 1938.

And this Jetta commercial that I thought was awesome back in the day since I had learned about the Coelacanth in school.
