Make sure that big hunk of perch is no larger than 1" square, or you may get more than a muskie if a game warden checks you.

most the muskies that were caught through the ice was in previous years when u could use whole "dead" perch, but from what i seen back then i suspect that most of them were caught on whole live perch.

Less than two years ago my then 3 year old son (but mostly me) caught a muskie on Pineview using 4 lb. test, 1/16 oz. jig and a meal worm. Not bad for his first day of fishing! He caught a perch before I finished drilling the holes then the tiger. He won the Photo of the Week on Doug Miller's Outdoors Show and garnered lots of publicity. In Minnesota where I grew up most didn't target muskies during the winter but many were caught and speared through the ice. Most likely fell to large suckers, 8-14", with a single hook in their back. Not legal around here I suppose and not good for those to be released either. If they'd take the small jig and worm we offered they'd jump at the chance to bite a 1" square of perch, sucker or what have you if they were in the area. Even though the one we caught was only around 33" it was a thrill to struggle with and especially to pull through the 6" hole! Personally I wouldn't target these fish in the winter as they have a low survival rate when released. Catching one in the summer when they have more fight in them due to the warmer water amd so that one can see them fighting your efforts would be more rewarding.

Good fishing,

Kevin

Good to see you signed up Matt. A friend was fishing for perch last winter by swim beach and hooked into a muskie, it was too large to get it through the hole and after messing with it for a while he lost it. He claims to catch them every winter using small jigs while he is fishing for perch. WH2

The current utah state angling record muskie was caught through the ice. My buddies dad caught it. It also broke several other world records. Cant remember exactly, but largest fish with a tip up recorded was one. He has it mounted in his house. He would cattch them consistantly right off Cemetary Point through the ice with perch meat on a Jig. He said he would fish for perch and wait for the bite to slow. He would figure the reason why was a tiger was moving through, so he would reel his perch line in and go in with his muskie bait

ok first most musky that come for under the ice are ones caught by guys going for perch or crappies. but there are guys that go after them. most try to use things like the rapala swiming jig, or bigger tube jigs. white, and perch being the best colors. some guys use tip ups with a peach of perch, and jig with a pole at the same time a few feet away to get them to come take a look. I plan on trying for them this winter. but I want you all to know I'll be useing 50 lbs test and a strong pole to get them up fast, a 10" hole all to help get it back into the water faster with out getting it to tierd out. hope this helps.

Ok, a couple of years ago, I caught 2 that were about 2 feet long each. The first one ate a perch I had hooked, and just sorta held on for the ride. The next one, I was jigging a #5 bronze blue fox vibrax specifically for the muskie. He bit about an hour after the first. Catching them big boys thru the ice is EXTREMELY lucky. I don't think they bite quite as well in cool water as northerns do.

The best way to target muskie is to fish for perch - Just reel them in really slowly...
