Yellow Sally Flies
#1
Well after being a streamer fanatic the last 6 years I am moving towards dry flies. So I need some help.
For Utah: What sizes and patterns should I have in my fly box when fishing the Yellow Sally fly? I have studied the life cycle. But as you know, there are many flies to choose from in the fly shops.
Thanks.

I've always just used a golden yellow Stimulator on a 12-14 Stimulator hook. You can add a little dash of red material on the butt of the fly too if you like.

I had my best day ever with a fly rod was last year on the green using a yellow sally, Ill see if i still have that fly laying around, Iwould like to learn to tie some nice sally patterns!I think it was a size 12 and I picked it up at one of the fly shops up there.

This is the one I use. Very similar to the one in the video that Flygoddess posted. A few hackle fibers for the tail, superfine dubbing for body, wrap a hackle and clip it for the legs, and a CDC wing. Quick and easy. It shines on the big tail waters like the Green and South Fork. I use a size 10 dry fly hook.

For match the hatch patterns this Goldie Hawn is awesome, floats great, ya can see it. I fished it in brighter colors, a commercially tied pattern exists, but I couldnt tell ya who.

Deer/ elk hair stimis do fine for attractor style patterns, but I just picked up a few Chubby sallys, which at a 14 are a bit big.

Fished the Chubby chernobyl for years as a golden stone. Available is a black & tan for the not much talked about Iron sally. That is found most the summer on our utah rivers. Although not as prolific as some of the smaller stones and the goldens that pop in june.
