What's doing Down Under
#1
G’day all,

Well I thought I would give you a bit of an update with what’s biting around my neck of the woods

As we come into winter the temps are dropping and the winter fish are moving in. I usually hit the water at 4:30am and temps are around 45F to 50F then warms up as the sun comes up to about 75F. It’s a great time of the year here. Flathead are still about and the better quality ones move into the shallows to warm themselves in the sun. Pics show some of the bigger ones at 30inch (81cm) and 26inch (67cm). Alot of fun on 6lb Nanofil and light jig heads throwing Gulp soft plastics.

Also, I have had a chance to do a bit of offshore kayaking targeting snapper. These are a fantastic table fish and highly prized for their fighting ability. They really come on the bite around dawn and dusk in the cooler months so for me it means early starts to get to my spots in time for the bite window.

There are also some Mulloway turning up in the estuary right at my front door. The smaller ones come in first around 20inch (50cm) and as it gets cooler you can catch them up to twice that size. They are a finicky fish and are not easily captured so its great to boat one now and again.

I caught a luderick also a while back. Thought you may want a look it to compare to your species. What you think? And there are some shots of some bream. These are great little fighters too. Much like a snapper except smaller.

Anyway, I suppose you lot are now enjoying the warmer weather and coming out of hibernation? I will be back in Utah probably around late July. Hopefully I will get time for a fish (my last trip saw me too busy to get out)

Tight lines fellas, be safe and look after each other!!

Cheers mate

My Yak is a Perception swing 400. Paddle only. They dont make them anymore and are a great allround yak for both offshore and river systems. Its 4 metres long (Just over 13ft long) I have paddled up to 20klms in it in one day (made good use of tides and wind though)

The peddle ones are a great way to fish. Down here we have the Hobie brand. They give you the ability to move and fish at the same time. Also hold your self in one spot against current or wind. Bit expensive for me but definitely on my wish list for oneday.

Take it easy mate!

Thank you for the updates on What's doing Down Under. Always good too see them when they come by. Although who is that guy holding your fish in your photos?

I still have that picture I made TDT take of us when we met you at Sportmans Wearhouse.[:p]

From the looks of all those fish, it would appear that you are not missing Utah at all. When you decide to make another appearence to the Beehive state let us know. Till then....G'day.

P.S. Good to see sand pepper jigs work on the other side of the planet too.[cool]

Gday ETDT,

Yeah, I have been in a good paddock since I got back, eating heaps of fish! (Still miss those 5 guys burgers though)

One of the most successful artificial bait in my area is a curl tail grub (around 3inch) in a natural colour. Gulp are great and also Gizits(?) which I cant get here.

Take it easy mate
