Slow day at Strawberry.
#1
Went up to strawberry today. I arrived a little later than I wanted to around 9:30. I started at soldier creek and caught a couple small rainbows. Headed over to haws point. That was the only place people said that they were catching fish. A couple groups of people had caught fish using worms and marshmallows. I didn't have any luck throwing jigs. I then went over to renegade. Fished there for about an hour without a bite. I talked to some guys coming off the water in boats. They said it was really slow compared to last weekend. I then decided to head back and fish the southend of ssoldier creek. Fished there from 4:30 to 7:00 tonight and caught 4 small rainbows on a black mairbou jig. The weather was great and next time I will take the boat for sure.

It sounds like you did as much driving as you did fishing. That's the key tho. Finding the fish. You're right about the boat I haven't fished the berry w/o a boat in a very long time. Look me up next time you go I can show where I like to hit the Soldier Creek area.

I was there on Monday. No luck at SC side but went to Haw's point and couple of older gentlemen were catching them left and right. I had no luck until they gave me some a tip, green Powerbait with garlic scent oil. As soon as I casted out I got a huge hit. landed 3 of them in a hour and then it was around 2 pm and it died.

Absolutely! Key is a fast sinking line (the Type VII is GREAT!) to get past the little ones. 30 to 40 feet is good, but I did better in 50 feet.

wow really i did best in 5-10 F.O.W. but right on the bottom and if the bait is not moving they are not biting

I was in a Pontoon and several doubles and triples, and a few over slot[Wink]
but I do agree as for shore fishing that you have no choice. I did okay in probably 5 to 10 feet.

Sounds like same results, different strokes. Remember though, we have no smell or taste on a fly[Wink]

One question. So if I'm trolling a type II line can I just put some split shots on and get that deep or does that not work the same??

Hit Renegade yesterday AM. Fast action when we launched @ 8 til 10 . Then dropped off. We boated 10 with one slot cutt. Wedding ring with a worm was best but any spinner seemed to work. Set them 11-13ft down on the downriggers.

You could catch fish, but it is not the same. You can't determine the rate of sink and it will cause a kink so to speak with weight in one spot.
I have put a Type V sink leader on a Type II before and that put me in that Type III zone.
All lines will eventually hit the bottom, with the different TYPES you can determine how FAST it will sink. Fall and Spring Intermediates sink very slowly for the fish holding close to the top for warmth. Summer or warmer months or even in coming storms, they will go deep. Of course there are exceptions to these thoughts [Wink]
Just a good starting ground.

And when I say, I was in 50' of water, that doesn't mean the fish were that deep. Actually they were 20' to 30', but I think the water was cooler at that depth.
That might help put your success and mine in perspective Duckdog.

thats funny you mention water temps at different times of the year i adjust temp to what time of day i fish i notice spring and fall bites are later in the day when the water warms up in the spots that i fish but i guess thats the same as adjusting the depth to look for the sweet spot in the temp range

What can I say, I generally don't fish afternoons. Mornings and evenings for me. But I do guide afternoons at times

Again, I use no scent or taste on a fly. All up to the presentation.
