Mantua Gills on fire and on beds
#1
My son decided he wanted to go to Mantua and fish the gill beds before his surgery tonight. Well my hopes of catching turned dim after we got there and seen the water clarity was terrible. we fished bass for a couple hrs and boated tons of small bass on senkos and jigs couldn't buy a big bite.
After seeing lots of gills come to the surface we changed up tactics and spent the last 30 min or so catching gills off the beds and the action was fast. small jig heads and a one inch gulp minnow or chartreuse plastic body of your choice.

The grin on that kids face is awesome. Good on you dad. I hope his surgery went well and he is on the mend.

Nothing better than that to hold a little guy over while recovering from surgery. Wish him a quick recovery and hope to see him on the water again soon!

That is awesome!! Your kid will be a pro one day for sure. I took my little boy (18 months) out last night to get some gills. He cant cast yet, but he loves to reel them in and give them a kiss. Gills are on of the funnest fish to catch out no matter your age.

My boy took a swim though. Hopefully he isn't scared to go in the boat in the future, but I think it made him a bit wiser.

My boy has gone in the drink twice, once about same age and then again at 3. Didn't faze him a bit. Mom was scared. Good luck.

I got my son (almost 3yrs old) one of these http://www.sunnysports.com/prod/STRPJD.h...7510090525 for summer boating season. It restricts him a little moving his arms but the safety outweighs anything.

I was that Dad at the pool a few weeks ago with the, "lets see how drown proof this thing is". Chucked the boy into the pool, he plunged under water then shot up like a submarine blowing ballast. Keeps his head entirely out of the water, and float is designed so they don't turtle up and roll on their backs.

Two of my kids have those and they are great! gives them lots of freedom to move around on their own without rolling them over on their backs or like you said creeping up and making them like a turtle.

um, er - you don't think free-fishing day would have anything to do with that wouldya?

Funny you guys talking about water sports - beware the swimmers itch (avoid the weeds). I probably spent more time with my head UNDER water as a tot - used to freak my folks out I'm sure. Aqua-Coyote!
Became a swim-team star by HS for being a breast-stroker.

No really. My other claim to fame was singing Second Fairy for the Joffrey Ballet's performance of Midsummer Night's Dream. with the Chicago Childrens Choir.
Yeah - my boy will laugh about that one forever. But I'll tell ya - being sweated on by a bunch of ballerina's is a pretty big honor for a 5th grader!

Water clarity has made it tough to sight fish for gills on beds but we were able to find quite a few right up in the brush on tuesday. Congrats on sharing with the son.
