I posted a thread already, but I will copy part of it here as well.

Went out Sat afternoon and tonight, not much to report but a few small perch and a good sized walleye that shook the hook at the hole. Ice conditions are spotty at best. right now the smaller lakes are around 6"-9", and the larger are around 3-4". There is a lot of white ice which is very thin and must be avoided right now. We need a good week of cold weather to make conditions better. Snowmobiles and 4 wheelers are traversing the ice as well as permanent houses already.

BTW Flag, If you want to get together for a day trip just let me know, I may be able to work somthing out. My wife's kids are gone every other weekend so I would have to plan ahead.

I don't know what you're experiencing up north but here in the metro area I don't trust the ice yet. Yes, we have our below freezing nights but Sunday nearly hit 50 degrees and all week we're supposed to have temps close to 40. Maybe in a couple weeks things will be semi-safe for walking on water.

sounds like you might have opwn water by the end of the week if it dosnt stay cold in the day light hours.

good luck and be safe....

With the couple inches of snow last thurs and the warm temps, the ice quality went way down. I hope we can get some cold weather for about a week and then let it snow.

me, I like to see six inches of snow fall in to open water then turn cold, makes for some of the best ice.

we are about to loose any ice we had in the next day or so from rain.

Well, the creek I drive over daily is running but there's ice on the edges. By the end of this week, it should be frozen completely over again. How quickly does ice thicken? We're expecting below freezing temps through the rest of the week. And another 2-4 inches of snow to escort it in.

that is a hard formula to predict.

every lake has its own special conditions that mey keep the lake open or allow it to freeze.

smaller ponds will freeze first. mind you that if there is a high silt level in the pond it certainly my apear forzen but can be mearly crusted over by an inch in mid january when main lakes have 2 feet of ice.

but typicaly once the first inch is over the lake, it prety much goes that every day the temps are in the teens you will gain 1/2 inch every 24 hours.

if temps drop down to single digets then the ice can grow up to 3/4 inch every 24 hours.

mind you that this will be the case up to about the first 2 feet of water. after that it takes below 0* degrees to make ice grow deaper. you have a thermal temprate zone in the water where the constant 42* temps radiates upward.

We may actually have something happening this week. It's been a freezing rain most of the afternoon/evening today. But we're supposed to get 3-6 inches of snow on top of that. Hard to say what's actually going to happen. The creek I usually drive over appeared from a distance to still have a trickle about a foot wide. But upon a slower, more careful stare, it looked like it was ice as clear as glass. Heh. I'll hafta wait until I see people out on the ice before I go out there.

[Wink] Well the not so smart ones started driving out on the lakes , 12 -14 inches of ice , but I wait till its over 16 inches !! Walleyeteaser and I started to fish this weekend on a local lake . Taking a ATV out to the house thats in 14 ft of water , we've iced about dozen and a half walleyes , with most running 17 - 18 inches , all at low light periods ! Will keep you posted !

I was looing at the weather bug, I see sub freezing temps later this week for here, you should be geting a solid cold snap,

if you havent already done so you can down load a weather bug for your lower tool bar right next to the clock on your computer.

it gives you the temp out side your house when ever you are on line. you get the closest weather braudcast for your closest weather station to your zipcode.

the program is called the weather bug. if you havent already got it let me know I will dig up the web address you can down load it from, it is free. you even get the current radar form your local weather station.

Thanks Dave. Had it at one time. My "Ad-Aware" program (spyware killer) took it off my system. I never used it anyway. My ISP dialer automatically shows me the current temp when I connect and has a link to the local weather.

Finally seen some people out one the ice here in the metro area. Not sure how good they're doing. Need to check the FishingMinnesota.com board and see what the word is.

Still don't have any ice-fishing equipment but might have found a source for some real cheap, if not for free.

How ya guys doin' further north? What are you catching and where are you catching?
