Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Lets get on with the report for this past week.
WATER: Temperatures still fluxuating from 5 to 6 degrees on the Pacific side to warmer on the Sea of Cortez side. Swells have been fairly calm on the Cortez side at 1 to 3 feet and a little bigger on the Pacific side at 2 to 4 feet. We do expect much more of the warmer water to sweep into the area from now on, as it is that time of year. This is going to help the fishing big time especially for Dorado and the Big Blues.
WEATHER: The weather has been hot and humid with some scorcher days. Highs topping 100 and lows in the low 70,s. Normally a light breeze in the afternoons and evenings. Typical Cabo weather this time of year and nothing we cant handle. We haven’t had any rain since last week about this time when we got a local down pour for a few minutes but nothing major.
BILLFISHING: I haven’t heard of any Blues landed this week , nothing like last week. The Striped Marlin fishing has been really good from the 95 spot all the way up to the Jamie Banks with lots of Marlin being taken on lures and live Caballitos about 1 to 5 miles offshore. There has been a good numbers of Sailfish in the area from the 95 to the Light House. Most of the Marlin have been in the 90 to 140 lbs range and the Sailfish are 70 to 130lbs. The Marlin have been pretty close to shore this past week as I have heard of lots of Pangas landing Marlin and Sailfish.
What is a Panga?
The Panga is a type of modest-sized, open, outboard-powered, fishing boat common throughout much of the developing world, including Mexico and Baja California Central America, the Caribbean, parts of Africa, the Middle East, and much of Asia. The original panga design was developed by Yamaha as part of a World Bank project circa 1970. Pangas are commonly operated directly off of beaches. The name comes from the upswept bow of the boat which resembles the machete or knife called a panga. In addition to being used by fishermen, pangas are also popular with Somali pirates.
Key features of the panga design are a high bow, narrow waterline beam, and a flotation bulge along the gunwale, or top edge of the hull. The high bow provides buoyancy for retrieving heavy nets, and minimizes spray coming over the bow. The narrow beam allows the hull to be propelled by a modest-sized outboard motor. The flotation bulge along the gunwale provides increased stability at high angles of roll. These features link the panga design to traditional Japanese wasen fishing boats.
The original Yamaha panga design had a length of 22 feet (6.7 m), and a waterline beam of approximately 5 feet 6 inches (1.7 m). The flotation bulge at the gunwale increased the overall beam to approximately 6 feet 6 inches (2.0 m).
Pangas are usually between 19 and 28 feet (5.8 and 8.5 m) in length, with capacities ranging from 1 to 5 short tons (0.89 to 4.46 long tons; 0.91 to 4.54 [url "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonne"]t[/url]) and powered by outboard motors of between 45 and 200 hp (34 and 150 kW). Their planing hulls are capable of speeds in excess of 35 knots (40 mph; 65 km/h).
The hulls are made of Fiberglassor, heavily reinforced by numerous bulkheads and usually have bow and stern enclosed flotation compartments.
In the hands of an experienced operator they are considered extremely seaworthy. Most pangas are expected to have a working life of between 5 to 10 years if properly maintained.
BAIT: Bait is the standard 3.00 dollars a piece and there has been plenty around.
DORADO: Well the Dorado fishing has turned around and has been really good. Lots being caught on Ballyhoo and lures with the fish starting to get bigger compared to what we have been seeing. Most of the bigger Dorado we caught this past week were from 22lbs to 47lbs. There are still lots of small Dorado in the area but they are getting bigger and we are seeing many more Dorado, in general, in Cabos fishing grounds.
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has been good from Grey Rock to the Light House with good numbers of Marlin being caught on Pangas and lots of small Dorado landed. The Rooster Fish have been showing up in front of the Solmar and have been caught slow trolling live bait. There is always some good action in Cabo close to shore the place is full of fish.
TUNA: The Tuna is fishing is spotty some fish being caught in the Porpoise schools and some blind strikes also. Most fish being taken on Cedar Plugs and King Busters. Lots of the Tuna are still smaller but yesterday 2 boats reported some nice Tuna in the 50lbs to 60lbs range caught up at the Jamie Banks. We sent 2 boats there this morning and its located about 16 miles north of us on the Pacific side.
WAHOO: The fishing for Wahoo has still remained slow this past week although I did hear of 3 being landed. So there are some around if you get lucky.
BEWARE: Remember if your not renting charter boats from companies who have been established in Cabo for the past 20 years ( Jc sport Fishing, Pisces Sport Fishing, Minervas, Redrum, Picante Fleet) you might have problems. There are many sportfishing fleets on the internet who are really not established business, who are operating illegally. Lots of these outfits are renting you a boat they have never even looked at and don’t even know where you would board the boat, leaving you the task of trying to find the boat. They don’t even have an office you can go and confirm your charter boat. You do not want to spend a day walking around looking for the boat and where you board. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Lots of vendors renting boats in the hotels are not reputable and don’t care about your interest and care more about a commission . 75% of the Cabo Fishing websites on Google are not even in business anymore or might be just brokers who don’t have an office in Cabo. Some of the Google websites are misleading and not established .Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs. You dont want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. You need to go to the fishing fleet office, while in Cabo and book your boat. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat.
