Hello to everybody!
Yesterday we've losted a really big yellowfin tuna just near the boat, it looked like 150 kilos. The line was too thin for it - 0.81 mm. Only 80 pounds. It's no possible to put thicker line, because tuna would see it then. Please, give me an advice, which line to use? I've heard about the thinner and stronger line. The quality is more important, than the price. I need it to be the same thickness, but for more pounds (110-150 lbs). Please, let me know, if you would find something like I am looking. It's a real problem: in three days there were losted 3 big tunas – impossible!!!
Thank you very much,
Alexander

It might not be a line issue, so much as a mate issue. When you get the fish to the boat, what are your actions? Harpoon? Tail rope? Gaff? Something!!! You can't expect to leader and hold that fish very long with 80 pound mono and tag line.
With that said, what brand of mono are you using? A quick search at Basspro or something equal and you can see the line diameters vs. the pound test for various different brands. Not all mono is created equal, that's for sure.
I don't see braid as an option for tuna either. I wouldn't use braid anyhow. The only advantage I could see even using it as a backing is gaining line capacity, because you still have to tie on the tag end and you need a long stretch of mono for shock resistance.

Thanks Tarpon! I learned something, I was convinced your answer would have been to use braid!

Braid has it's place. Offshore trolling or chunking for big game is not it. The stretch of mono in this scenario is actually an indispensable advantage. The fact that mono stretches under pressure gives you kind of a "shock absorber" when a monster fish decides to dart over or under at 30 MPH, or crashes out of the water slinging ass and head everywhere. Braids inability to stretch will create one of two scenarios: the line snaps instantly, or the hooks are snatched out. When you are dealing with 100+ pound fish that are fast and/or acrobatic, mono is king.
I use braid as a main line for bottom fishing when i'm targeting Amberjack, Grouper, snapper, etc...... Always use Fluorocarbon leader material no matter what type of fishing i'm doing.

I have caught Yellow fin over 250 no problem 50 mono on spectra. To much drag. If you go to heavier line you will have less capacity. Were you on anchor or trolling ? I have never lost a tuna after I am hooked up. I caught an Albacore that went 60 lbs. on 30 lb. test on a worm king.

I bet they were trying to man handle it once it was leadered.
