[#800000]Yep, saw that last night on the late news on 13. And like the fragmites war being waged in the duck marshes of Utah, this quagga mussel war is going to be a decades long process that we will probably never win. We will be very lucky if we can even maintain the status quo.[/#800000]

Utah is not serious about stopping the invasion of mussels in Utah waters. If they were ,they would be having mandatory inspections,at all Utah marina's on the gorge. When the DWR goes to a inspection of boats and trailers, instead of just some stupid test(that any 12 yr old could pass). Then I might think that they are starting to get serious about mussels.

Huh? I have towed my boat twice into Idaho this summer and have searched for the checking station, on I-84 at the rest stop, and it has been nowhere to be found.

They definitely have one on I-15 just before you get to Malad, though.

It's all relative.

Idaho no longer has one southbound on I-15 entering Idaho from Montanan. Montana doesn't have one southbound entering Montana from Canada. But both states have a checkpoint northbound entering their respective states. Just like Utah does. Entering Utah on I-15 at the southern border is a mandatory boat checkpoint. So, Utah is no different than Idaho or Montana in that respective. All three states stop boats coming in from the south, but don't bother with boats coming from the north.

It really does not matter how anal a state is or isn't about checking/cleaning boats. Migratory birds will transport the itty bitty things wherever they go. Yes it might slow it down a bit, but it will NOT stop the spread. You can clean every stinking boat that goes into any lake and it will still happen. Just like trying to stop the flooding Mississippi river....it can sometimes be mitigated, but no one here is gonna stop it. Personally I think it's a waste of money to try to stop it. Spend the money on research about how to selectively kill the things.

I agree that birds will be a contributing factor,to just about any body of water becoming infected with mussels . But i do believe that states also have a responsibility to be proactive ,and doing what they can(within reason) to help to stop their waters from becoming infected .

In the end maybe all the efforts of both the states, and those of us that use the water, won't amount to anything. The longer that any body of water can be mussel free is good for all of us.

If the state of Utah is serious about helping their state waters(gorge) from becoming infected, they need to do away with the certification test, and inspect as many boats as the can.

Responsible boat owners are not the problem. It will spread by some ignorant dumbass or some stoner on a kayak. You know the type, they're the ones that leave beer cans and dirty diapers along the roadways and fishing holes. I think they pee on the toilet seat and rub shit on the wall in the head also. Ya can't fix stupid. Educate. They ought to have a class and certificate program for any watercraft use.

Excepting the fact that they work office hours... and quit when September arrives. I drive through all the time without the inspection station manned.

I get it, though. There's a threshold on how much $$$ can be thrown at these problems.
