Is Lake Mead really going to close? Instead of having a guard collecting fees, are they going to have a guard to turn people away? What would happen if there is no guard at the gate and someone went fishing?

Good. I'll use this thread as my defense, just in case.
I spent 4 hours in the middle of the day today on the water. The entrance station was unmanned at 1 pm.

Well don't do that. [angelic] I don't speak for NDOW or any other government entity, that is only my opinion. Any fish today? Boats on the water?

There goes my defense. arggg
I paddled my 'yak around government wash. Only 1 small striper that I'm eating as I type. Well worth the effort.
Early in the afternoon there were a few boats but as the sun sank the boats disappeared. At 5pm I only saw 1 boat. The quiet was only interrupted by the waterfowl.
Someone cleaned up the area over the weekend. They did a very nice job. I brought back a couple of beer cans some jet skiers didn't pack out.
It may have been small but that fish was good tastin'.

The Bass are schooling right now. You are on them and catch one almost every cast or nothing. At least what I saw/experienced Saturday out there. If your sonar is fairly clean don't bother with the area at all. Dunno about Stripers didn't go looking for them myself Saturday.

We went out of Boulder Harbor yesterday and fished the 33 Hole area. Caught a lot of tiny throwback stripers, LMB and SMB. Did manage to get a few really nice ones.
Striper boils were sporadic and spread out. We did manage to catch a couple of nice striper, and 1 nice LMB and 1 nice SMB.
A beautiful day at the lake, just didn't see the boils we had hoped for.
And, yes, you will be able to drive around the lake, but the access roads to get to the lake will be closed. The marinas that have boat slips, owners will be able to check on their boats but not go out on the lake in them. If you live in a houseboat at a marina you must move out in 7 days.
This can change quickly, as who knows what will happen. Just giving you information I received from the various Lake Mead and Willow Beach FB pages.

Metro posted on Facebook today that both Red Rock and Lake Mead are closed, and anyone trying to enter will be turned away. Campers have two days to exit the Lake, but the post did not say what happens to the campers that don't clear out, or what happens if you find yourself in there after today, you know, by accident...

As far as I'm concerned:
[ul][li] I paid my yearly fees to get in there.[/li][li] I paid my fees to get my license, river stamp, trout stamp and every other stupid stamp they hit me up for.[/li][li]The taxes on my Ammo Purchases Pay for NDOW
[/li][li]My Federal Taxes Paid for the Park Rangers.
[/li][/ul]Government shutdown or not, I'm going Fishing.

So let me get this straight, they don't have a budget to keep the park open but they can find money to man the gates to keep people out? What a joke.
For the last couple of months the gates have been unmanned for a good portion of the time because of the sequestration crap. So that means thousands upon thousands of people streamed into the parks without ever paying a cent. But now they're going to pay police to prevent the people who paid for the pass from getting in there?
This is complete Bullshit! If I have to park outside the gates and then hike in there then so be it, but no way am I letting these bastards tell me I can't go fishing.

Lake Powell is closed to fishing, camping, etc. Campers, houseboaters and fishermen are being asked to leave the lake and adjacent area. No Launching unless you want a ticket.

Paying someone to turn people away reveals something about the person who made that decision.
However, I read on another forum that as of 10/1/2013, 11:30am, " The East, West, and South gates were opened and unmanned like they usually are this time of year. You just drive through. "
Maybe common sense will prevail. [ ]

Just seen this on another forum..... This government is out of Control....
The government who has no money to pays its workers has sent its workers down to pull out the launching docks at Lake Mead. I guess they really want us to feel the pain!

All the Gates are barricaded and all the docks have been pulled onto shore. Two out of three gates I tried had Park Police guarding the entrance.
Lake Mead Blvd Entrance is blocked but NO GUARDS!
Saw some poor guys out there stuck with no way to get their huge boat in because the docks were all pulled and it was two windy to keep the boat stable enough to get it on the truck.
Pulling the docks in when people are still out there on boats, especially the people who are living out there is just vindictive and mean!

It's actually pretty unlikely that the feds are going to allow this. A number of places around the country that had private staffs were also shut down because they happened to be on or near federal land.
Mount Vernon, which is privately owned and operated, was barricaded this morning becuase three of the parking spots were on land run by the National Park Service.
This has nothing to do with them not having resources. Trust me Lake Mead was crawling with park rangers yesterday, and they had more than enough resources to pull up every single boat dock out of the lake.
