Gorge ice must be coming!
#1
Had to go to Rawlins WY yesterday and noticed the Green River is iced over solid. Hoping the Gorge will be following soon.

When I got off of work the other night up in Park City it was six degrees.

I keep hearing how good the Gorge is at first ice. Can't wait to see it for myself.

Still might be a little early for the best burbot catching but Firehole is usually the first to freeze, so there is a good chance it is frozen since the Green is frozen.

Just came back from Red Canyon Lodge half way between Manila and the Gorge dam, did not do any fishing, but passing Sheep Creek boat ramp there was ice around the edges of the arm of the lake going what appeared to be about 30 or 40 feet out from shore. Also into the main body of the lake at that point it looked like there was an ice berg floating around out there, we saw it Friday on the way in, and this morning on the way out. the warmest I got all weekend was 15 degrees mid day. Should be pretty soon for the ice to cover the lake.

I walked on the lake at the cabins there, although I dared not venture more than ten feet out, there was still a patch of open water in the middle of the lake over the spring that was full of birds off and on all weekend, and one crazy Loon that stayed there the whole time we were up there. we were in cabin L if you look up the map on http://www.redcanyonlodge.com it was very pretty up there. the roads were icepack from I-80 until we crossed the Utah border again on the last stretch into Manila.

I don't know where you were looking at,but i can guarantee that the green river is not iced over solid. The river here in town, has a little skim ice on it, but it will be about two weeks before firehole has any decent ice.

Firehole is my favorite spot come ice season. I love catching those burbot and I've gotten my biggest ones around that area. Good spot in my eyes tho I've never iced a trout there.

It won't be long, it is almost always colder at Firehole than any where at the Gorge. Even with the warmer temp this week, I'd bet it will still be plenty cold enough at night to keep from melting during the day.

Just remember, December is one of the better months to die on Flaming Gorge, trying to be a hot shot, or be the first one on those "world class" burbot. Just two years ago:

And the Green River is flowing nicely right into the lake. Saw a fly fisherman fishing in it yesterday, and he didn't have an auger.

I saw a boat going in there a couple days ago, but by December 9, everything could change. I'd call the marina there on the 8th. Thin shoreline ice is already around.

from buckboard north as far as the eye could see and all the way to anvil was wide open today NO ICE anywhere not even any of the back bays and was 50degs today at 3pm. There was one boat out in buckboard. the green had some floating thin ice this morning and WIDE open this afternoon.
So its going to be a little longer before we see some safe ice unless the weather gets colder

We heard that Burbot fishing was on fire so last Saturday we drove all the way from Kaysville up to Firehole to find out there was about 3 inches of ice on the lake at the ramp. We drove over the hill back towards the lake and you could see where there was open water. Instead of going over to Buckboard we drove down to Antelope to try fishing there. Caught one little laker in fours hours of fishing. It was our first try for Burbot so needless to say we did not get off on the right foot.

Were you thinking there would be no ice at Firehole? Did you notice if there were any holes in the ice at Firehole? It is usually good fishing there at first ice. The last time we were there right after the first ice we were not too sure about the ice, so we just stood on the docks and drilled holes. If the ice is thick, I usually walk off the ramp and to the left around the corner, good rocky area about 100 yds from the corner.

Talked to a guy from Rock Springs four days before we went up. He said he fishes there about three times a week right where you said you fish and was killing them. The last cold front that went through knocked the temps down enough to freeze that area. It was our first time fishing out of there so now we know what to expect. I did not see any holes in the ice. The docks were out all ready. The ice on Saturday was about two to three inches thick but it has been sunny up there for the last few days.

That new ice is so clear that it is scary to think about walking on but some times it is thicker than it looks. Did you punch any holes to check on how thick the ice was? The year we fished off the docks, I was surprised they had left them in, maybe the ice came early that year and they froze in place before they could remove them but it made for a great place to fish from and we evidance that other had been there before us and caught some burbot, we got there an hour or two before dark and stayed until 10 or 11pm both times. There were several groups of people there and as we were walking out, one of guys said they had been there a few times that week and had iced several over 30 inches, including one that was 35". Now that you know how to get there it should be a lot easier on your next trip. As it get closer to the end of the year, the catching will get better as the bots move in to spawn. The area I mentioned above can be a great place to fish and don't be afraid to drill some holes close to shore, we have caught them as shallow as 8ft of water. When we set up, we usually punch 10 to 15 holes or more, starting in close and drilling holes out 20 to 30 yards from shore. We set up our tents about midway and then put our tip ups or extra rods in close or out farther to locate the fish. If you do this, make sure you put a bell on all these extra rods, so you will know when you get a bite. In case you did not already know this, you are allowed to have up to 5 or 6 rods[:/] per angler in Wyo.
