Tip Up ID
#1
I was planning on doing some Tip up ice fishing and wanted to know how you guys label your tip ups. I've been out with a few people in past years and they have the same or similar gear to me. how do you tell them apart? Do you label your gear? In other places I've fished I've left the tip ups out over night. So I'd like to figure out a good way to tell the difference from my gear to theirs plus follow the law by having proper ID on gear.

just put a sharpie mark on the flag or something....more importantly you may want to look into the laws in Idaho about leaving lines in the water.

"It is illegal to fish in any waters of Idaho

with more than one handline or pole with a line attached; or

with two poles or lines without a two-pole permit; or withmore than five poles or lines while ice fishing; or by archery,
spearfishing, snagging, hands, and netting except as permitted.
Not more than five hooks may be attached per line. The line or
lines must be attended by the person fishing."

I cut and paste that right out of the 2013-2015 Idaho regs.

The only thing you are allowed to leave out on the ice is a shanty or pop-up and then you have to have your name, address and phone number in plain sight. Not trying to be a know it all here....just trying to keep you from getting your stuff taken by the warden

yeah, I'm used to this:

Methods of Taking Fish
• A valid fishing license is required for all types of fishing.
• Spears and bows count as lines for purposes of determining line limits.
• All unattended fishing devices (crayfish traps, minnow traps, fish traps, tip-ups, setlines, etc.) must
have the angler’s name and phone number or name and ALS# attached.

Thanks for the heads up. A lot of the items we have such as ice huts also need this info. I will go through the regs and verify more and call the regional office for clarification.

Nah, I don't think that. I appreciate the timely answers. Very helpful. Plus I got the regs pulled up as well. going through seeing what you can use and can't use. So far so good. Just the tip up thing is the difference. Also.. The only allowed 5 poles here. The two pole license does not get you access to more rods. Plus, I can't be the ONLY one who ever asked about the two pole permit thing when it comes to ice fishing. Maybe here but I've had other people ask, so it was a good learning tool for me to research myself today.

I never noticed that part of the regs mentioning tip ups. I would definatly call and clarify that with FG though. I just did a search in the current reg book and I cant find that anywhere. On that note if you get a different answer from the FG office I would get in in writing, signed and noterized for when the warden comes and complains...then send me a copy so I can use it too!

Oh, that reg is NOT from Idaho regs. its from where I'm from Smile. Just stating that, it is the rules I am used to following. This is my FIRST ice fishing season here in Idaho. Super excited!!!!

Other difference in Idaho would include:

No live bait (minnows)

This shocked and I felt as if I need to call FG when I saw little 3 - 4 inch rainbow trout frozen to be used as bait. Did not realize you could use "Game Fish for bait" but the local stores all sell the bait here.

Yeah. When I moved to Idaho back in 2002 I was flabberghasted when I walked into the bait shop with my minnow bucket just to find out they are illegal. Talk about ruining a southern boys day! It took me years to figure out how to catch a crappie with fake baits!
