[#800000]There’s a major problem with the current crop of in-line ice reels and I would guess all fly reels. And that problem is the retrieve ratio. The smaller spinning reels are going to have a ratio of say 4.0:1 up to around 7.0:1. What that means is that the spool will turn 4 to 7 times for every one turn of the crank handle. This is good. The fly reels and most of the ice fishing in-lines have a 1.0:1 ratio. This is not good. It takes FOREVER to get a jig up from 40 feet to check the bait. Aaaaaarrrrggghhhh! If you REALLY want a 1.0:1 ratio reel, I have 4 I’ll let go real cheap. [cool][/#800000]

[#800000]There are a couple of new entries this year in the in-line ice fishing arena that have a 2.6:1 ratio; one from Eagle Claw[/#800000][#800000] and one from Frabill[/#800000][#800000]. While the ratio is still on the small side, the line take-up rate is about 15 inches with every turn of the crank handle. That’s not real good, but neither is it bad. The Eagle Claw ($30) is about $5 cheaper than the Frabill ($35) so I plan on getting 2 of the Eagle Claws this season. They both have push button releases, adjustable star drags, and free spool tension adjustment to compensate for any lure weight your likely to use.[/#800000]
