NEW: Six Mexican nationals accused of illegal shark fishing San Antonio Express-News Web Posted : 12/11/2003 3:03 PM

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — The U.S. Coast Guard apprehended six Mexican nationals early this morning on allegations of illegal shark fishing in U.S. waters 15 miles north of the Texas-Mexico border.

The six men were turned over to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection for prosecution. The men were identified as Jose Jalazar-Hernandez, 28; Juan Velazquez-Carbajal, 18; Miguel Patricio-Yanez, 32; Juan Gomez-Cruz, 18; Victor Aguilar-Rivera, 44; and Aaron Silua-Melo, 21.

The men were in three separate lanchas in crews of two fishing for sharks using gill nets.

Coast Guard Station South Padre Island crews, aboard two interceptor boats, stopped one boat with five sharks onboard and up to 50 in its gill net. Another lancha had more than 130 sharks in its gill net.

A third lancha was spotted while the Coast Guard crews were escorting the other two lanchas into port. The Coast Guard crews pursued the lancha until it broke down and drifted ashore. Border Protection agents then arrested the lancha crew.

“It’s something that we’re constantly fighting,” said Adam Wine, chief warrant officer with the Coast Guard, of the illegal shark fishing.

Thanks.
There is also an artical about the high concintration of sharks in the surf along the coast.
Ilegal fishing is what hurts the future of honest anglers. You found a good artical to post for all to see.
Thanks again.
