So I'm all fired up to get out and hit Hyrum, even get an early morning start, and I can practically feel the moon-rays beating down on me before I climb out of bed. Ugh - the great debate, to fish - or not to fish....
It's a danged bright moon, and not a whole lot of snow shielding the ice in shadows... those silly slimers have probably been munching down all night long, and ready to turn a sharp middle fin my way if I dared taunt them with an offering.
Had a couple ice-newbies that wanted a tour, but they flaked this week. Likely just fall into home-chores today, and consider a "glutton for punishment" venture tomorrow anyway - moon be damned!
Other thought is to run to BL, and see what's up with the Cisco run, but I'm not really prepped for that. Might try for the Disco next week...
Any thoughts on Moon-Phase and ice-fishing? Might be a good time for a NIGHT trip for Crappie Slabs.

Dawn and dusk are the worst times to fish during a new/full moon. At least if you read the Solunar Tables. The theory is that fish bite best at high tide. Now, I know there aren't "tides" as such on freshwater, but the tidal pull is still there.
As I've reported, it sure worked for me this week. I fished Pineview from mid-morning until 2 pm. The ST predicted best bite from noon until 2 pm, and those were the ONLY hours when the fish bit aggressively. Take it for what it's worth.

Trout bite no matter what. Only white bass and wipers have a serious shutdown with the full moon. Other species are effected but not as crazy. But trout don't seem bothered by cold fronts, or moon phase. They tend to bite regardless unless there's too much fishing pressure. You do have plenty pressure on hyrum though. People keep bragging they caught and released 200 trout every time I'm there. I'm pretty sure it was true too. All you have to do is drop in and jig a couple times……bam!

Hey Yote moon didn't hurt us too bad. Took my young men group over and got 34 in about 3 hours. Between 3 people fishing. Biggest perch was 11" and biggest bow about 12" most perch were 6" and bows were 10-12". It was fun to watch the boys having a blast. Good luck tomorrow. J

Thanks for the feedbacks. Rocky, seen those reports supporting your theory, but I can bet them Freddies are pretty equal opportunuty. But I like the theory.
So Jeff, where'd ya fish at, roughly. I know you've taken scouts out from the launch before.

I tend to think that the "high tide" theory doesn't apply to rivers. Or if it does, it is much less important than water level/flow fluctuations.
In lakes, it might be more noticeable in larger lakes. I dunno. But if you are where the fish are, the solunar tables seem to be pretty accurate. They won't bite if you are where they aren't, of course.

In my opinion, the best time to go fishing, is when you can.

No contention there, Oh wise one. But for us permanently unemployed geezers living the life of the seven-day weekend, well...

Yote we did swim beach this time and fished right there close to the beach. Mostly perch but probably a dozen plus trout. It was fun. Later J

Turn this into a fishing report, or sorts. Dragged my backside, and sled out for an afternoon shift to Hyrum. Not a whole lot of tents out there, nice day - sunshine, pretty clear ice, could use a skiff more snow.
[inline "Tracking Out.jpg"]
Word was "shallow", I didn't go all the way to the inlet, but parked around Big Toe, and found a couple fairly fresh holes to try. Seemed like fish were moving in and out, so set out the chair, and got rods rolling.
finicky little bites, and whiffle master coudln't buy a hookset. So of course - I kept trying. Finally hooked up a Finless Freddie, he was followed by the bakers dozen of his clone buddies over the next couple hours. Though one was much smaller, and with the right light- I could swear it was a tiger pattern to it.
[inline Troutsicle.jpg]
Then a different kind of tug, and a fat perch flopped on the ice, Found several of the more miniscule mob too, explains some of the super light bites.
[inline "Pucker Up Perch.jpg"]
I would have moved around, but seemed to be having a steady inquiry, just lots of looks, sniffs, and wanders away. So many rise to the occasion, only to fall again, unsatisfied. Running up to eye my flasher, then dropping past the offers - NEVER have I seen such finicky action at that puddle. Maybe it's a moon thing.

Today I was telling my kids that they can't catch fish if their lines aren't in the water. [laugh]
