went yesterday afternoon and there was no gate at the island, we drove all the way down to the ice on the boat ramp to unpack our sleds.
That being said it was slow fishing, only 1 bow.
6 inches of ice, shoreline a tad soft too.

Island marina is open. DWR has been ticketing those parking on the highway just north of the marina and hopping the fence they put back up. Trying to get more day use fees I guess.

It's not for more fees, if you were there this summer you would of seen how many people were trashing that area around the Island.

Ya I agree with the trashing. Well they could at least have one dnr hiding up there watching people then if they are trashing the place give them a ticket because not everyone is trashing the area. For so many years fishing that area first time in my life I've seen it closed.

Folks parking in a spot that has been available for years, that costs nothing, that adds to the state park parking that is Full all summer long. The action to close the parking is disproportionate and a ridiculous solution for littering that has it's own set of legal deterrents.

Well, we went out this morning. 4:30am - 11:45am. The gate was open. We paid our $5 for access. We fished in 38-40 FOW using white, pink, and green tube jigs, crappie jigs, and a nice homemade jig. Had one bite and one fish, a bow 16". Several other groups showed up around 9am, but as far as I know 4 fish were caught. SLOW. Hope things turn up. The fish were suspended. Not many catching radar at all.

This would seem confusing to me if I had never been to DC. So at the island there is a state park entrance that is always open for plenty of parking if you want to pay the money. A few hundred yards down the highway from there is another pull out where cars have been parking for free over the past years, and they have now put the gate back up and signs stating no parking so that place is not an option. Even further down the road is another pull out that is still fairly close to the south east side of the island where you can park for free, but you have a steep slippery walk down to the ice over boulders, but there are some trails and it's some what manageable if you really don't want to pay. I've found the fishing to be much better the last few years fishing 15ft down over deeper water instead of right off the points in 12ft like years past.
