Cutler Skunken
#1
Well seeing TD catching fish at Willard last week motivated me to give Cutler a try. I know of a few deep spots that still has 10' of water so I set out to give it a try. First try was Friday, it was mostly a scouting venture. The place I tried has a lot of current so I was scared of the ice conditions so I got an old light weight aluminum boat that I pushed out on the ice with me in case I went through. Punched the first hole and found 14-16" of ice so I got a little braver and went to work with my finder and found fish but couldn't coax a bite, but I only fished an hour or so. So I went back yesterday and gave it my best try, probably 3-4 hours trying everything I could think of and not a nibble even though I kept seeing fish on the finder. Some were suspended and some on the bottom but nothing wanted to play. So what should I try, any ideas? I used all kinds of jigs, waxies, night crawler, fathead minnows, scents, colors. Tried multiple levels, dead stick, jigging even bead head nymphs and no interest whatsoever. So I'm feeling a little defeated today. Can't even blame it on the moon after Curt and Mikes nice trip. Anyway guess I'm skunked again. Later J

Bummer....[:/]

I probably would have had a pretty good laugh seeing you out in a boat on ice though.[laugh]

That's an old thin ice trick from years gone by goose hunts, keeps ya on top on thin ice, but occasionally drops through as you jump in the back of the boat before you get wet, but you can get back on top of the ice fairly safely... Worked to keep me safe, but didn't help the fishing much... I noticed I've put on years and lbs since I used to do that trick though.. Might hurt if I had to jump in the boat now days... Catch ya later J

If you wanna borrow my camera and "see what you can see" - if the water's not too murky. Clarity out there can be a killer.

So - either let me know when, I'll tag along, or you're welcome to borrow it - I think I can trust ya! Just remember - it is NOT a floatation device.

Do the sloughs have water/ice? Haven't been out that way for a while. Maybe some scouting is on order.

Be safe out there buddy!

Sloughs are still pretty skinny for water, I'm playing on the river. Water is fairly clear I can see a jig down 4-5' which is good for the Bear. That would be fun to take a camera and check things out, not sure when I can do it with Cisco next week. I think a lot of the big mid level marks may be carp, but I'd love to see what's there. I'll give ya a call when I get a chance to try it again if you're interested in tagging along. Thanks for the offer. Later J
