Second first time for cisco
#1
Well about 9 years ago I tried dip netting cisco and did not do very good. But had a friend tell me I needed to go back up now. So we headed up this morning at 4:00 am got there at about 6:10 (10 degrees) got all are gear out to the edge of the 1" ice. I flashed the light out on the ice and could see not only the rocks on the bottom but hundreds if not thousands of cisco. So I grabbed the axe and made a 3' by 3' hole cleared it out and started dipping cisco first try 3 second try 8 by then both my friends had made there holes and started getting some. My wife sitting in the car realized she was missing out on something she came out when my 3rd try netted 18 cisco plus one rock. So it was her turn. After a little help she had her limit. And we started to load jeep up to head home both my friends had there limit. we pulled back out on the road to head home at 6:50 with 4 limits. Still dark we headed home. 4+ hour drive 40 min netting we had a ball....photos soon...

Nice, sounds like a fun trip, now what are you going to do with them[Wink]. I didn't do the cisco thing this year but last year I decided to smoke them, won't do that again, they are much better deep fried[Wink].

Sorry, I don't have any recipes for them, the only times that I have eaten them, except for eating the smoked ones, is when I have had them at the Cisco Disco at Bear lake. Bearlakefishguy is the one that you need to ask about cooking them. I could be wrong but I think that after they cut the heads off, gut them and scale them, they dip them in pancake batter and deep fry them in peanut oil. I know when cooked like that, you can eat the whole thing, except for the tails. Hope that helps.

I snip off the heads and gut them. Then run a butter knife up each side and it removes about 90% of the scales. That's good enough. I then drop the wet bodies into a mix of cornmeal, pancake mix and flour (equal parts) and season with pepper and seasoned salt. Deep fry the whole thing. The BEST part is the crispy tail!! You can eat the whole thing since all the bones completely dissolve when cooking.
