You have to resize the picture. The more pixels they have, the bigger the file size. Also picture quality affects the file size. Lower quality pictures have less pixels..Hope that helps.

Couple tutorials, and links to resize tools.
I'll commonly just open paint, and resize to 30%, and save as. But the system seems real picky about an avatar picture. http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gfo...ost=404512 http://www.bigfishtackle.com/forum/gforu...ead#unread One note, don't check "inline" unless you are really going to place it.

Easy way to do it if you have a smart phone is too email the photo to yourself and use the photo you emailed , it will generally ask when you email it to resize , resize to small

I use this pic resizing tool. It will resize to both 400 and 150.

I use the snipping tool that is built into Windows 7 and Windows 8. I shoot in raw so my photos are between 30 and 40mb a piece. The snipping tool only takes seconds to copy each picture. It keeps the pic big on the screen but the size of the file is very small and will load quick. Also it makes cropping quick. Just make sure you save it as a jpg.
