below Grace, here is the high flow schedule for 2014.
The normal water level is 70-100cfs. These flows are abt
900cfs.

It looks like this:

I forgot to mention that when they increase the flows for these boater events below Grace Dam, they also increase the flow below Oneida Dam to pass this extra water along.

If you fish either area, beware of rising water conditions and get out of the water.

Dang, I don't think I'm going to be able to make it up there before the blowout. I guess I'll have to wait until the fall [:/] Thanks for the heads up though, I've been wondering when it would start.

i think these releases are doing the fishery good. it has blown all the crud out of the river and i feel that the trout and the bug populations are doing better

I do think that it helps any river to have a bit of a spring flush, otherwise the fine silt and sediment build up. Timing is important though. Good to see that they are doing the runs in larger blocks now and mostly in the one month. They are trying to time it before the cutt spawn.

I guess the farmers don't like it much because it stirs up so much sediment that they can't irrigate without clogging everything up.

I haven't tried fishing it in the weeks between. From what the studies indicate, many fish hunker down and are still there. I stil wonder how many go downstream though.

If they are there, then they have to eat sometime, and it might as well be my fly!

I would be curious what it does to nesting birds.

I used to live in Grace and fished Black canyon a lot. I would much rather wait until the end of may, 1st of june to fish it when the water warms some and clears up. It is much better fishing then. When you go during the summer and fish the bottom you can pick up the smallmouth bass, there are a few good ones in there.

I like smallies even more than trout. Are there enough of them in there to make it worth targeting them specifically? I might have to check it out this summer.

There used to be. Youll have to go through a bunch of them to get a good one but, they fight way better than trout. I believe they have to be 12 inches to keep, there are some big ones in there just not a lot.

Sounds like it might be worth fighting through the stinging nettle to fish up there in the summer. It sounds about like down in The Narrows as far as size goes, but hopefully it will be less crowded and there will be less junk floating in the water. Thanks for the info.

All of the hazards of getting down there is what keep people out. Its just not so user friendly, not a place to take small children.

Oh for sure. I usually go up in March or October, so the undergrowth is going to be thicker, but sounds like it's worth a trip. It will be fun switching between bows and smallies. Thanks again for the info, always fun to have new trip options in the future.
