I am interested in trying mussels for wipers,
Do you use raw or cooked? I picked some mussels today and didn't notice they are pre-cooked in the shell,
Any thoughts? Thanks

I've used the raw mussels before, it worked pretty good on the wipers. I've heard of others using cooked one with similar result, good luck...

Well thank you kindly, So in your experience do they stay on the hook pretty good, or do I need to make some mesh bags?

Cooked mussels will be soft.

The ones that everyone are using are the 2lb bag cooked mussels from wally world. the bags are littered all over the shores if you don't believe me just look around.

Not sure how they work, never tried them, Some people I know have had some success. I think like all bait fishing you need to be where the fish are but you will catch some passing through occasionally, They are soft after they thaw out I would fish them in a piece of nylon like a chicken liver to keep them from stealing the bait constantly.

Mussel doesn't stay on the hook very good. Put the mussel on your hook and wrapped them with sewing threads. It should keep the bait on the hook, good luck...

I think you should try sautéing them in a little garlic and butter. A little Cajun spice is nice too. Serve'em on a bed of buttery or Alfredo noodles. You can't go wrong. If you eat too much though, Count on more than a 1 wiper.

Of course if you go with Oysters instead of mussels you might find yourself rollicking in a faux spawn on the rocks. [blush]
Are there mussels in Willard? They do certainly have Crawdads, so shell fish is shellfish, eh?
Drives me nuts the way some anglers seem so inclined to bring their bait packs down to the water, then leave the packets behind. I mean REALLY! How hard is it to drop it in a proper can?
I'd vote for raw over cooked. More "fishy" flavor, and probably a bit more rubbery for good hooking.
MAGIC THREAD is great if you want to wrap something. Elastic qualities, don't need to tie it on.
I also found some "elastomeric bandage" at a hospital supply - stretchy mesh, works better than cheese cloth or roe-sack material. Of course it costs more, but a little goes a long way.
