It was a blustery day, thought I should head west where the fairer skies seemed to be, but glutton for punishment, had my mind set on a spot - north toward the dark skies.

Had a bit of fun on the Bear - weathered the storms, gave the pup some 'venture time. Couple feisty carp gave me a run, and a matched pair of his & hers Channels - almost 2 footers. Forgot my real camera, and have a hard time snapping good ones on the phone.

Seen a LOAD of Carp 'running the falls', like Salmon working upstream. Kept the hound entertained! She's fascinated with fishies. (maybe I'll snap a video when I remember the real camera)
Tried a pool for Crappie and Bass (maybe an Walleye?!) though the Eddy did churn, no lines did I burn. Wet feet, cold pup - was time to stomp home.

Shallow - off the main river, but quite a bit of flow where I was at. Seem to be stuck at the 2 foot mark. Gotta do something to find some of the bigger ones.
Maybe with nicer weather coming - I will untarp the ride and get 'er reading for some floating.

I'm sure some of you guys have noticed the drop-off in 'bigger' cats this Spring? In years' past, catching the bigger ones 27"+ were almost common. Not so this year (at least for me). My biggest is only 25" (yesterday); for some reason I've caught several only in the 18-22" range using the same methods and for the most part hitting the same general areas.
Have you guys noticed this too or is it just me? I'm thinking the draw-down last fall had something to do with it, and if that's the case, I'm sure it will recover.
The good thing is they're still in there, even if fewer and far between.

Thanks Yote, I'm thinking things will pick up a bunch this week as weather gets better. I didn't even wet a line this weekend so I guess I shouldn't talk much. Good luck with your float. Later J

Hey Lava I do think the draw down has changed things. I'm finding very few cats in places that were busy for cats last year, but I'm hoping they will return soon the cats I have caught seem to be fat and in good shape so I think they will bounce back. I should learn to move around, but I'm a slow learner and set in old habits. Maybe I'll try something new next trip. Good luck getting into the big ones. Later J

Yup good news for you for now, but don't worry they moved to someone else's spot so the Catmaster or Set the Hook will haul them in. But then again I've never been too stiff of competition. How has bird island been treating you? Once I get the wiper notch on my belt I'll get back to herding cats and see if I can keep things interesting. Later J

Skunk-- I'll be at the island tomorrow. Stayed home today to let the water warm up a degree or two. I'll put in a morning shift and then, with the full moon, my first night shift. Will report tomorrow.
I drove out to Goshen Bay this a.m. and watched the carp removal guys working the west side of the bay -- airboat, motor boats, and three big barges. They fill the barges with carp and haul them to a conveyor and then into a big goose-neck trailer. Lots of carp. I talked them out of a couple of big carp and transformed them into cat bait. Both carp were big females with egg sacks the size of footballs. Makes you wonder if they will ever be able to remove enough of them fast enough to make much of a difference??
Warm weather this week should fire things up a bit. Should be a good week of catin'. Watch for a 30+ incher this week.... and, yes it could come from the north or the south.
Bring it on.

Good luck, to a 29.9" mark and hope you have a fun trip, you are dedicated and that's what it takes... I think you're right this week will make some good marks on everyones cat sizes... I might even break the 7" mark... Hey hope you have fun and be safe... Hope the grand kids join you to add a little more enjoyment for you... Guess school will be out soon, do they have jobs this summer or are they going to become your deck hands again? I will be watching for your report... Later J

Yeah yeah, but you're not seeing Catmasters bi-weekly marsh reports he's dumping on Facebook. Lavaman just needs to learn to tie better knots and pitch his line a bit farther - he'll find em too. I may not have found my river monsters yet (well, carp) but consistent catching is a good start.

Yote-- Watch for a dramatic shift in those scales this week. (Do catfish have scales??)
And... I am well aware of the quality of the competition. However, the south is heating up and we will surge into the lead by end of May. Count on it.
Skunk-- my main crew consists of 12 yr. old twins. Both are die-hard cat fishers. They have convinced their Mama they can miss school Wed. without consequence so they will be with me then. They do not have summer jobs other than a few chores and, of course, baseball. They will be available full time in a couple of weeks. Always fun.
Good luck on your efforts to break that big 7 inch mark. My guess is that it will happen this week.
