Flaming Gorge 6/20-6/22
#1
Headed up to Flaming Gorge last Friday and fishing was very good for Kokanee. Stayed and fishing out of Buckboard this trip because we were meeting up with a friend at that end of the lake.

Fish came on a verity of lures. Friday they seems to key in on pink Kokanee Kings, Saturday it was double glow billed pink squids and Sunday they wanted spinners. RMT dodgers were used on all our rigs and fusion blade seemed best followed by Bahama Mama. Fish were right on top of the water down to 45’ but most came in the 20’-25’ depth. Water temp was 59 degrees heating up to 62 by midday.

Friday evening I got caught in the nastiest wind storm of my life. FG made me and my little 18’ boat feel very small. When fishing big water I usually have a lot better sense of situational awareness but this time I straight got caught with my pants down. The swells were in the 7’ range but were right on top of each other. It was ugly!!! By the time we made it back to the marina we were all soaked and had about 50 gallons in the boat. The old man that takes care of the slips said it was a 72 mph wind. Damn that was scary!!! Thank goodness this was the only weather we encountered the entire trip. Light skies with no wind otherwise. Be safe out there and tight lines all. [fishin]

Nice catch. I know what you mean about the Gorge wind.
I have a much bigger boat and still have been caught in the big bend when you wonder If you are going to make it back!

Wow, glad you are safe! Saw that storm coming as I had just pulled out, glad I got off when I did, although it seems that the waves never get too bad up in the canyon.

Nice report and pics Trevor, how big was that largest koke? It looks huge in your pic. Glad you made if off the lake safely.

Yep that was crazy scary. Most storms you can see coming in but this came up and over the mountain so fast we just never seen it coming. Very hard to control the boat when the wind is blowing so hard it’s ripping the water of the top of the lake. Your eyeballs can’t blink fast enough for that kind of wind and water in your face. The biggest was just shy of 4lbs with a solid 3lbs average. Koke are so fragile that if the fish looks or acts stressed I won’t release it just to die under the boat. Thank goodness I didn’t have to do much selective harvesting because they were all nice fish.

We normally stay in Anvil; in fact that’s where we camped a couple weeks ago. But the fishing was much better (at least for us) up north. Last trip Sqaw Hollow was where we did our best. This trip we just stayed in the Breeze Hill area.
