How to catch big spring walleye while fishing in locations you may not expect. In the spring while the water is still cold the fish will spend a lot of time in shallow water and areas with new weed growth as this is where the baitfish will be hiding out from predators. Since early in the year there isn't much cover you can often sight fish walleye in the clear shallow water. This isn't their favorite location though so if there is stained water on the lake head there. Also it is a good idea to try just on the edges of shallow flats where the water darkens. Check out the big walleye I catch casting out into the deeper water of a shallow flat. The water was only 9 feet deep but the walleye were feeding very aggressively in this shallow water.
