Tips for Willard from shore?
#1
Heading down to visit family this evening and was thinking of stopping by Willard with my two kids to try and get into some fish. Any tips for fishing from shore? Is it worth even trying, how has everyone been doing this time of year down there? Thanks for any tips or advice you can give me.

Based on recent reports, it appears you probably need firearms, an attack dog, and at minimum pepper spray to safely enjoy a day on Willard.

Good luck.

Here is what the DWR site had on Willard. "If you fish early in the morning or during the early evening, you can catch wipers and walleye from the shore. Try using a silver spinner or a lure that imitates a gizzard shad, such as a blue- or black-colored crankbait. If you're after wipers, mussels are a great bait to use from shore.". Fishing the northern dike out past the outlet has been good for me. We have been trolling though.

[#0000FF]The info from DWR is about 2 -3 months old. The water levels are low and the summer water temps are too warm for fish comfort. You can catch cats from some places around the shore but walleyes and wipers are mostly well away from the shore and in deeper water during the daytime.

Not as many anglers hitting Willard these days. When the fishing is off and the power squadron is on it doesn't make for fun fishing.

This is the latest I got from the DWR.
WILLARD BAY RESERVOIR: (July 18) Park Ranger Travis Hancock reports good fishing at Willard Bay. Some anglers caught a few wipers over 24 inches long. They put up a good fight. Other anglers have been catching good-sized catfish. Thanks to Travis for the report.

Trolled it for four hours last night with all the baits that were working a few weeks ago for me. Not a bite. Good luck and watch out for the biting bugs.
