Headed to North Lake Tahoe area this week with my family. Everything I have seen online would lead me to believe that I have a better shot at success fishing in the lakes around Tahoe more so than Tahoe itself. does anyone have any experience fishing that area? I will be fishing from a float tube and am game catching both trout and bass. Thanks in advance.

From a float tube, you might be better off at one of the other lakes. There are several to choose from, but Spooner Lake and Marlette Lake are both fun from a float tube and are close to North Tahoe. There is always Pyramid Lake (BIG Lahontan Cutthroat) and the Truckee River as well.
I have fished Tahoe from a tube, but I have to tell you that it is COLD and my legs eventually cramped up fighting a Mackinaw (Lake Trout). It was fun though. Just make sure to check the regs about flotation devices if you do.

I grew up in Nevada City and fished the area extensively awhile back, though admittedly a little time has passed...
You're spot on on fishing other than Tahoe, especially from a tube. North of there are several good lakes, Boca, Prosser, Stampede, and my favorite - Jackson Meadows. Tube should be good for all; also, Donner has Macks, browns and bows as well. Don't overlook the smaller streams and smaller hike in lakes in the area for solitude and semi wild fish. Good luck!

As an avid brook trout angler I KNOW where I would go.
Kirman Lake. It holds brook trout averaging 15-18" with some much larger. Six pound specimens have been subdued. Sounds like the Golden State Boulders to me. If Cutts interest you, there are some to eight pounds, but that really doesn't call to me. It's those magnificent brook trout!
It's about a three mile easy hike, from what I've read. If you go, please let me know how it was.

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't sure if anyone had been in the area but this has been helpful. I have a couple of follow up questions. Are there any good bass fishing spots in that same area? And for the trout, are there any specific tactics that I should be prepared to use? I am a spin fisherman and will be loaded down with rapalas, spinners and jigs.

Used to do really well on gold and black rapalas trolled very fast for large browns and some rainbows. Needlefish were good, gold with orange head...have a good time over there. Beautiful country those sierras.

Nanofil.

I was up there a couple weeks ago. I'd recommend Donner Lake, Stampede, or Boca reservoirs. The Truckee and Little Truckee are also good bets. I'm more of a fly guy but I'm sure rapalas, spinners, bait would all work great too. The drought's been pretty rough up there.

Thanks again for the advice folks. We had a great time at Lake Tahoe despite the slow fishing. The drought has made things very difficult here. I fished the Truckee and Little Truckee with spinners with no success. Deepest holes and runs I could find were maybe 2 feet deep and everyone else was trying to fish them too. I fished Boca puddle for an hour with nothing but seaweed to show for it. The only win for the day came from Prosser Creek Reservoir, in the form of a healthy 3 lb smallie, my personal best. Caught it on a ribbon tail in firetiger near the dam. Some of the toughest fishing I've experienced really.
