5 Yr. Old first fish (kind of)
#1
I really wanted to fish tonight so I made a Father/Son outing of it with my five year-old. Went to Millrace Pond in Taylorsville, not expecting much. We rigged my son's pole with a worm below a bobber---no luck. Tried some spinners, and a tube on a jig, too. No luck. Saw the fish starting to rise as it got later, so thought I'd try a fly/bubble for that last 30 minutes or so.

I would cast out, and Jacob would reel in. He's five and I didn't feel like teaching him to cast an open reel tonight. He got tired of reeling in about two casts too early; and I feel a small fish on the line just as the bubble is passing a small pipe in the water. I thought it was a snag, at first. When I realized it was a fish, I handed the pole to Jacob so he could finish reeling it in. And, surprise! It was a little bluegill! First time I've seen one of these. They're cool little fish. After taking the pic, I realized there was probably a better way for Jacob to pose with the fish (better for the fish, that is), since we did let him go. Nonetheless, he seemed to have plenty of energy as he swam away.

Don't really like the destination a whole lot, but it is the closest to my house, just a short 10 minute drive. Perhaps as I get more skilled, I can coax more fish outta that little puddle.

Good job getting the youngster out. There is nothing better than watching young fishermen develop a love of the sport. Great grins from the kids too.

I use to live in that neighborhood next to the pond. Still remember years ago when it was basically a forest with huge carps in there where it use to connect to the jordan river. I went there a month ago and saw tons of small baby bass so it could produce some bass in a few years. That place is loaded with dinky blue gill but hard to catch fish out of there. Best time to catch fish there with my experience a few years ago was during winter when there was no ice on it.

What ever it take to get another kid outside and away from the video game world these days.

Way to go - Dad! Commuity poonds are great places to get the kids hooked in fishing -- if they aren't biting or the kids' attention span wanes before you're done - its only a short trip home.
