Wakeless at Newton
#1
I went into the Logan Sportsman's Warehouse, and looked at their report board on Monday. I hadn't heard about this before, but it said the lake is now under wake-less restrictions. I looked online and found this:
http://www.rules.utah.gov/publicat/code/...05.htm#E18

tl;dr
R651-205-18. Newton Reservoir.
A vessel may not be operated at a speed greater than wakeless speed when the reservoir is at or below 4,761 feet above sea level.

This may have been discussed, but I hadn't seen it. I guess we are halfway to a safer lake?

They should just make Newton a wake-less body of water. I would fish it more if that was the case.

I heard that was coming, but what is the water level when that takes effect? Once the ramp is exposed?
Would help if they posted some signs. Would help more if it's enforced, and educate the public.

This is interesting:

The use of motors whose manufactured listed horsepower is more than 35 horsepower is prohibited, and a vessel may not be operated at a speed greater than wakeless speed at any time in the area south of the Benson Railroad Bridge. A vessel may not be operated at a speed greater than wakeless speed from the last Saturday in September through March 31st in the Bear River, east of the confluence with the reservoir.

I don't think anyone knows this either. I'd heard it applied to the "Maze" - anything south of the wooden trestle bridge at Benson, but this makes it sound like the whole thing.
Can SKI or WAKEBOARD boats function with a 35HP? Seems again - some signage and regulation should be in order.
So it does say the "use" - so if you have a bigger in-outboard, but only use a kicker motor say - then that's copacetic?

They are talking about the maze only in that paragraph, the wooden foot - bridge was at one time a railroad bridge, and is very commonly referred to as "the old railroad bridge". Kind of confusing, but the rules do specify railroad bridge in Benson. The train bridge you're thinking of is in cache junction.

I agree. It won't mean much with no enforcement. In the past, I have been told by members of the power squadron that they take their PWC's there specifically because there is a lack of enforcement.

At least it's a start.

If I read the chart correctly for this year, there would have only been about 6 weeks in which the wakeless rule would not have been in effect, ending the first week in June. Again, I hope they post it at a minimum, but with no enforcement it won't mean much.

[#800000][font "Comic Sans MS"][size 3]It went below 4760 ft on June 9, 2014. That means there shouldn't have been any power squadron folks up there since the effective date of this new rule - August 1, 2014. I would guess there has been some PWCs there on every weekend (if not also during the week) so far this year.

Wow - good link, bookmarked it!

That's a pretty telling story - pinged back to 08, and talk about draining the swamp!

Didn't see much for nothing of stocking, but I guess I missed this one - Tiger Troutlings? I know there's some perch and bluegills, expect some bass, don't know if any musky made it through - though

Surely aren't interested in investing in the lake as a fishery, that's for certain.

so what ever happened to the notion of - what do they call it - zero pool, or some such, the lowest they'll let a reservoir go? I think they forgot about that one there.

Have to be brave or stupid to still launch there. Oh wait, PWCs, big trucks, small brains - right. Nevermind.

I witnessed some equally brilliant thinking up in Idaho the other day. This was on the complete opposite side from the road. They must have been driving through the farmer's fields to get clear over there. Somehow they thought it would be a good idea to take an SUV to the water's edge on a dropping reservoir [crazy]

That's what I was thinking. I've always done well along that bank fishing jerkbaits during the prespawn. It's going to be that much better now [laugh]
