Bear Lake WF ----- Shore even an option?
#1
Well after a long hunting season, starting with birds in early September and just recently ending, the wife and I are ready to get back to our fishing game!!!

We have been putting of the Whitefish at bear lake for a few years, but this year I think we finally want to give it a try. Weather pending, we are planning a trip Saturday the 13th.

The main question here is, will a boat be necessary to get to them? I do not have a lot of experience with the spawn, but as we may not have access to a boat this time around, we might be trying this as bank excursion.

Any thoughts on the matter are, as always, greatly appreciated.

Yes, you can catch them from shore. If you have waders, go to second point or Cisco beach and wade out as far as you're comfortable and fish the 5-15 foot range right on the bottom with a 1/8 ounce jig with a black curly tail. Tip it with a 3/4" piece of worm ang jig it in slowly while keeping it right on the bottom. Small twitches while retrieving it are essential and light line (4-6 pound) are also necessary. Bring a lot of jigs because if you're in the fish zone you will lose a bunch if you are doing it right. A couple dozen or more per person should be about right.

If you don't have or don't want to use waders you can catch plenty of them also, just go to the bear lake state park marina and fish the outer rocky edges of the marina using the same technique as stated above. You will also most certainly catch a cutthroat or even a few. They are in shallow also eating smaller whitefish. Be patience and be willing to move around and you'll find some. Good luck!
