Bear lake...good day for white fish
#1
Well, I had some time to fish today, so I decided to stay local and invited a buddy and my uncle to try for some whitefish.
We got out of the marina by 8:15 and made the run across the lake to Cisco beach. When I got over there some other BFT members were already on the scene. Skunkedagain and ntrl-brn-rebel were hard at it.

My second cast resulted in a hard bump and a tough fighting 19 1/2" whitefish. It was game on after that. The fishing wasn't insane fast, but it was consistent. We caught our limits of whitefish between the three of us and we also all caught a cutthroat or two.

The cool moment of the day was when my uncle was reeling in a 10" whitefish and out of the blue a 24-25" cutthroat chased it and grabbed it at the surface! It refused to let go of the whitefish and after he had a tug of war with it for a minute it was apparent that it wasn't going to give it up so I netted it and released the cutt back to terrorize more whitefish[Smile]. That whitefish was mangled, hehe!

The winning lure combo of the day was a 1/8 ounce yellow jig head with orange eyes and a 1 1/2"-2" black and sparkle curly tail body tipped with a small bit of crawler. 8-15' of water and jigged vertically right on the bottom to 2" above the bottom. The bites were very light and I don't think anything heavier than 6 pound test line will work well for this kind of fishing.

It was nice visiting with everyone as we fished and everyone at least caught a few. Beautiful day to fish also.

Hey Mike, nice job on those fish today. You didn't mention all the small ones you released too. Seems like you guys had fish on almost steady. I was glad I finally broke the skunk. I was afraid for a long time that I made a long trip for nada. Your tip on line Wt seemed to make the difference for me. That and color. I got the Cutt on white but everything else was dark. So who was ntrl-Brn-rebel? Anyway enjoyed the company and thanks again. J

Hey Jeff, glad we were able to fish together and glad the tip helped. Ntrl-brn-rebel was in the thunder jet boat that was south and then just north of us. He is our local guide and a really good one at that! He really knows his stuff. (He is also one of my favorite firefighters that I have)

There sure were a bunch of small ones, we must have thrown a couple dozen back, but they still were fun. We still ended up keeping some smaller ones, but The big ones put up a fight to rival anything that swims in utah! No airborne antics, but pure brute strength. Really fun.

Yes they sure do fight, the one big one I caught wrapped around my anchor rope and I was sure I'd lose her, but luckily she was really hooked well. I could hardly get the hook out of her. Well thanks again it was fun. Hope to make one more attempt at them to see if I can get enough to smoke a few. Got home and found I had the same exact jig combo you were using with me, just took too much junk to know where to find it. Got some 12 lb line switched for 6 lb so maybe next time I can get a few bites. Later J
