GET AWAY FROM PEOPLE! yesterday we fished with in a hundred yards of the population at the county ramp and went 4 for 4 on hook ups. Power augers, snow machines and four wheelers, every minute, from 7am to 12pm.
Made it to the boat launch at 8am. my friend, my son and I walked out about 300 yards from the congregation. Probably close to 400 yards from the ramp. Although there were far less people than yesterday. 25 degrees, 50 mph winds and drifting snow might have had something to do with that. Punched 3 holes in 13ft of water and spent 30 minutes trying to get my hut set up in the wind. Once we got every thing set up and started fishing, things happened fast. Fish constantly cruising through on the flasher. Sometimes 3 or 4 at the same time. I had to look down the holes every once in awhile to make sure my flasher wasn't malfunctioning. Constant jigging was key. most of the fish would just take Off after investigating the lures but With in the first hour we landed three and missed probably 5. They are biting light. So light it took me a few missed bites to realize they were bites. The rod would just get a little heavy. seriously, I wasn't wearing gloves and I could barely feel them. We ended up missing a slug of fish but by 11am we landed 7. Then two guys came and set up shop 20 feet from us and took 20 minutes to punch ten holes. The fish instantly disappeared. I marked one fish in the next hour and caught it. So we packed up and headed out. When we left there was a pretty significant snow drift up against my hut. The wind was so bad it was hard to hear each other talk in the blind. At least we could watch the football games on my phone in the hut, even though we couldn't hear it. HA!
