Pineview Crappie

Any information out there on Crappie opportunity up at Pineview? I am sure the water is still pretty cold. At what point (water temp, etc) do they start to get up near shore where you can catch them?

If i go i'll share a report on how it went...

they were all on their beds in early may last year, probably be end of april this year.

Pineview water temps are likely too cold now.
Crappie generally start moving from winter haunts when the water temperatures warms to 45-50 degree range. They will congregate around the entrances of creek channels until the water temps reaches around the 50-55 degree range. Then they move towards the shallower secondary creeks and bays, following channels. When water temps get to the 55-60 degree range, the males should be in shallow water looking and fanning out spawning beds, while the females stage out in the closest deeper water structures.
As a general rule, surface temperatures in the 62-65 degree range are almost perfect for shallow, spawning crappie. Hope that helps.

Are there any crappie left in Pineview? I was up there a couple of years ago and they were scarce. Not like in the late 80's, that for sure.

water temps yesterday were 54, talked with a few ole fishermen i believe one is 93 and the other is 89 and they were slaying the crappie from a boat, they would find the schools and jig them..nothing over 12" is what one of them told me... Fish should start moving shallower with the warming water.


best fishing is when there is structure for them to move shallow and spawn, lake is getting higher every week not close to full pool

LOL, well all I can saw about your statment is, you should have been reading the reports from PV from this last winter, there are more crappie than perch in there right now.

I've caught tons of crappie during the spawn to the point I left in search for bass [laugh]. Most of them range 4-8" but there's a few in the 10-14" range.

I didn't get out on the ice this year, at least to fish. Hunted a bunch, though.

Any size? I used to love taking my canoe up there during the Spring. Very peaceful and quiet. Never outgrown bobber fishing.

I never fished this Winter either, just read report after report of limits of crappie being caught. The size is what kept me away, most were around 8" with a few up to 10 and a occasional big one around 11 or 12". This Summer and into the Fall those fish will be bigger and this coming Winter should be a good one for some nice sized crappie.
