rod building for scouts solution

rod building for scouts solution.
after taking some time with the local leaders we desided
to teach the kids some basic lure building.
then give the two scout leaders the basic rod building and let them pick the boys they think will do well and pass the basics on to them..

or do you think 13 and 14 year olds would learn well enough in a class of 8 kids and be serious about it to have it work out well.

that's my question ?

It worked in our scout troop. It helps if the adult scout leaders are excited about fishing.

This might be a good project for the "Composite Materials" merit badge too!

If they are interested in it, they will learn it.

I would have the Scouts pay for the materials themselves so they have some investment in the process. And I'd have a fishing trip first, showing them some great action with the very type of rod they would be building - if feasible, of course.

Have fun.

Scouting is great, thanks for making a difference in the lives of boys and improving our community, nation, and world.

my wife said that with all the skilled people on big fish tackle ... bft should get together and make a day of it for local scouts.
letting some of the old hands give demonstrations like different types of fishing fly, trolling, casting, bait with all the basics knots, and set ups lure making how to snell a hook make pop gear. and maybe a clinic to show float tubes pontoons kayaks.
and how to be a good stewards of our water.

and the second half of the day set up and have a fishing yard sale

your input would be awesome

I'm not a scout. But would love to learn how to make my own rods. Does it cost a arm and a leg to get started?

not if you buy stuff piece by piece or get some one to go in with you on the costly parts.
you can make your own rod wrapper its the dryers that cost I have several of them and the one I built seems to be the best for me.
then just the cost of your components that you choose to build your rod

the best way is for me to show you what will need and where to get it so you can choose the items that will fit your needs.

just throwing out a price is the wrong way to help you
I don't want to scare you off when you may be one of the guys that really likes it and turns it into a great hobbie

you can call me if you like 801-599-9016

I'm a scout leader myself, the problem with big activities and boats is all the regulations. I had a day trip planned out last year to bring the scouts out and catch a bunch of wipers on my boat, but was shot down. There are a bunch of hoops to jump through along with all the scouts being required to have their swimming qualifications.
We ended up hiking to freeway bay and pulling in some nice kitties from shore which the kids thought was awesome anyway! This summer I'm going to have our ducks in a row so we can take the boat and get em hooked up on some wipers!

sorry to hear there is so much politics in scouting these days that's why I was thinking about a Saturday so we can show all the good things about the sport of fishing float tubing pontoon and kayaks not on the water but all the set ups and ways to modify and build your own fishing machines

[#0000FF]You get something put together and I'll show up with some lead melting stuff and pour some jigs for them.

If that doesn't get their attention I can show them how I learned to start a fire by rubbing two girl scouts together.

A friend of mine did this with his scouts. He contacted Batson Enterprises and they hooked him up with everything he needed, (blanks, components, rod wrapping jigs and driers, etc.) for a ridiculously low price compared to retail. They like to support youth groups building rods. If you decide to do it, I'd give them a call.

I have everything needed for rod building just wanting others with different skills to want to show there skills off to the scouts and leaders.
I wonder how to get enough scout leaders that would like to take part in this type of event? to come forward with there ideas remember its just not for scouts we all could learn something new??????

This is why you cordially invite all of your scouts to a non scout sanctioned fishing trip. I mean not that that ever happened when I was in scouts.[Wink]

Try taking the idea to your local district at round table. From my experience from being on the district level, they are always looking for new ideas and ways to help the troops.

Yeah, tried that too and got in even more "trouble" by trying to go around the system... so I invite them one by one and invite them to bring a parent or sibling or friend.

Keep us up to date though if anything gets organized, I would definitely bring our boys to an event like this! I may be an official merit badge counselor by then, and if not, I will bring my bro in law who is and we can get the boys all hooked up!

[#0000FF]You should know better than to operate heavy equipment while drinking.
