Lincoln again
#1
I don't want to over-do my posting on Lincoln so I assume those with no interest will just skip this post.

Great day today. Pried the mattress off my back at 5 a.m. and immediately went in to major depression when I saw a steady drizzle of rain. Decided to head for UL anyway. Maybe just try for a few wb at the launch if nothing else. Weather cleared right up and the waters were calm. Was on the water by 6:00 -- water temps 63-64 degrees. Lots of carp but decided to focus on cats.

Caught about 10 cats by 10:00 with the last one being a real bruiser. It only takes a second or two after hook set to tell if you have something special on the other end. When it feels like a moving snag -- you've got a bigun'. When I first saw this bad boy I thought for sure he would go 3 ft.-- big ugly head and a big pot-belly. He made several serious runs before I finally got him in the net. A little "ground shrinkage" when I put the tape to him but still a good solid 30 incher. I didn't put 'im on the scales but guesstimated him at maybe 14 lbs. Fun day and all fish were released.

That 3 footer is out there and I plan to converge with him in the near future. Love it.

The best is yet to come.

Mighty fine catfish there. It looks like you may have left an inch or so off of the measuring tape (my untrained eyes show the tape a little behind the tip of its mouth).

a great job again! since you were concentrating on the cats, did you use two poles? I'm going to have to get down there soon. Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report. I was there too and I think we talked briefly on the water. We found all our success over by the L. We boated over 50 white bass, two cats and a bluegill.

Hats off to you again BLK, the first to crack the 30"ers of the season well done!!! What a freak'in hog... Wish you had a picture hoisting that monster, had to be 11-12" across the head... You're just not going to let up this season and give us a chance to come back are you... So do you think this will be one of your final three fish? Still early I know, but that's one big fish... Wow you're pushing 90 points again... You sure make it hard to go to work when I know you're off catching big fish... Way to go... Later J

Well I wanted to hit LB first but I needed the gas to last in my vehicle a few days longer. Glad you got into some.

Thanks guys.

Kent-- I agree I might have stretched that one out for at least another half inch but hard to do when your subject will not hold still for the pic. Still a nice fish and there are bigger ones out there.

Bumpy-- I do use two poles, braided line, one pole with a wb and the other with a chunk of carp. I hold a pole in each hand kinda like Yosemite Sam holds his pistols... Won't tell you what I use to run my ipilot.[sly]

Car Doc-- Yep, that was me that had to stop by and show off my big 'un. Good to talk to you and good to hear about those wb down by the L. I need a supply of them... curly tail?

Skunk-- I think anything over 30 inches will end up in someone's top three. I wish I would have had a crew member with me so we could get a good picture of that cat. He really had a gut on him and the contest pic does not show that. Next time.

And, you mention having to work while I'm out fishing every day.... I feel real bad about that but not that bad.[:p]

But seriously, you raise a good point. Is it fair competition when one guy is encumbered by the demands of work/school and can only fish a couple of times a week while another, being retired, can fish every day? If the contest was for something more that a small prize and mostly bragging rights that issue might need to be addressed. But for now.... I'm after 'em every day the weather permits... fair or unfair.[Wink]

The best is yet to come.

You really raised the ha on that one. Glad your on my team. I know the teams changed a little due to the number of entrants but as far as I'm concerned that's only on paper and prizes. I know the truth and BLK just scored a TD.

Hey BLK you got me putting in the nightshifts trying to stay ten points behind, but even though it was a fun night of sassy cats nothing scored as a keeper for me... One of these days I'll try a different spot and maybe find some bigger cats... Starting to think 25" might be the biggest in this area... not to mention that I got a 27.5" in the same area with the setline, but they sure won't bite my line... Anyway all's fair in cat wars, workers or retired we just have to work with what we can.. It's a long season and all should be able to find time to try somewhere along the line... although you are seriously kicking my can and driving me nuts... Next time... J

[#0000FF]Nice work my friend.

Kinda emphasizes the old saying: "All good things come to he who waits...as long as while he waits he works (fishes) like hell."

Definitely going to do better when you can keep tabs on what the fish are doing on a daily/weekly basis. And it also helps to get in as many trips as possible.

Cain't ketch 'em where they ain't...and cain't ketch 'em 'thought yer line bein' in the water.

Thanks Pat,

Just had to get out there again today. Perfect weather... overcast and glassy calm. Cats are still hungry... picked up 8 or 9 channels and a couple of mudders.

Got off to a good start with two 25 inchers right out of the launch channel -- then it happened: I was overcome with an unstoppable urge to do my part to reduce the carp population in UL Reeled in my lines and took up the old bow. Carp clusters everywhere and my intent was to get two or three for bait and then get back after the cats. One hour and about 25 carp later I finally got back after the cats. Biggest ones turned out to be the first two I caught so nothing contest worthy. Got off the water just ahead of some ugly lookin' storms.

Brought 6 carp home for future bait -- everyone an egg- loaded female.

Good day but wish my crew could have been there to do the shooting. I'm sure we will have another shooting session when they are with me.

Fish on.

I also changed the plans for a few carp on date night. All shot with bow at Lindon Bay.

Big ol' cat there, BLK. The head on that thing is huge. Nice work! Looks like your covered on bait for a while, too. I need to try my hand at some carp huntin' one of these days. Are those bow set ups expensive?

FMF-- A bow fishing outfit need not be too expensive (expensive being relative). Most guys just use their hunting bows with a reel setup on them. I bought mine, a PSE Discovery 2, specifically for shooting carp. Seems like it was just over a couple hundred bucks. It's compact and fits in my boat without taking up a lot of space. The AMS reel is the only way to go for shootin. carp -- it's about $80 bucks but well worth it. I've tried the fishing reels and the spool wind systems and that is why I have about a dozen arrows ($20 each) scattered on the bottom of UL. I've never lost an arrow or had a "kick back" with the AMS. If I were just starting out I'd by the AMS and build from there.

A suitable bow can usually be picked up on KSL classifieds for a reasonable price. It's fun shooting but it can be addictive.

Try it, you'll like it.

Great, thanks. I'll have to look into it a little more. Often times I'll get close enough to a school of carp on my tube, I can hit them with my rod tip. Sneaking up on them armed with a bow sounds like a lot of fun.
