Red Fleet Fishing! I took my son fishing last weekend no Walleye but plenty of Rainbows and Largemouth. With there plans to kill Redfleet this fall everyone should get in on the great Walleye fishing. (Why won't they just leave my Walleye alone) They plan on restocking Redfleet with sterile Walleye, wipers yellow perch and Rainbow (thats a good thing) but the Walleye fishing last year was absolutely fantastic. Apparently the DNR doesnt believe that nature can take care of herself!!! I believe they are going to destroy one of the best up and coming Walleye fisheries in the state.
There I've said it and i feel better!! For those interested the Walleye are spawning in brush creek now but will soon be over by the Dam and the fishing will be Great!!

We've already beat this poor horse to death in another thread not long ago. Walleye are an invasive species that are harming endangered species down stream. The DWR is killing the fertile walleye and replacing them with sterile walleye so the downstream impacts will be mitigated so the Feds and State don't impact the fishery further. They understand fairly well how when we mess with nature sometimes bad things happen. These walleye were introduced by a selfish bucket biologist who didn't think or care about downstream impacts which are costing BIG $$$$$ to fix. Walleye, pike, and smallmouth bass are greatly impacting the native fish in the lower Green and Colorado River. The chubs, suckers, and pikeminnows may not matter much to many sportsmen, but it's obvious they matter to many others with all the federal money dedicated to their welfare.
I'm glad you've been enjoying the fishery as it is now. With a little good fortune your walleye fishery will be back to full health relatively soon. I think you and lots of others will like the new fishery with sterile walleye, wiper, tiger trout, yellow perch, black crappie and mountain wihitefish. Game management is a work in progress and will be altered as time goes on and we see what's working and what isn't. Stay tuned! [fishin]

I hope i will enjoy Red Fleet with the changes but i can't help but wonder how it would be if it was left alone. Last year i was catching Walleye in the 7 to 8 pound range.
I am also worried about the idiots that will inevitably stock other species (fertile Walleyes, Muskie or others. I am aware that the sterile Walleyes will throw off the spawing of the fertile Walleye, but what inpact will the fertile Walleye have on the sterile? You know right that someone will introduce fertile Walleye? I am real excited about the introduction of Wipers and Yellow Perch.

Anyone introducing fertile walleye back into the system after the establishment of sterile walleye would be wasting their time unless they were able to stock a huge amount. The odds of a handful of fertile fish finding each other amongst many thousands of sterile fish would be quite low. After the treatment, the DWR has plans to step up patrols to help discourage any illegal introductions while lawful introductions get established. There will always be the chance of illegal introductions but hopefully this new mix of gamefish will reduce that chance at Red Fleet again. I am really excited about this new mix.

Randy,
Still hoping to see some pics of those 7-8 lb range walleye you were catching in Red Fleet last year. Surely you would have snapped a photo or two of fish of this size. I'd love to see them!

I see ...so they are teaching the Sterile walleye that may go downstream not to eat the endangered species.
I wondered why they called them schools.
Smart Fish!!!!!!!!

I hate to rain on your rant but the DNR isn't messing with "Mother Nature". Red Fleet is a man made reservoir designed ultimately for irrigation. They are restocking it with YOUR walleye for our fishing pleasure. The glass is half full bud. They could've killed it off and banned fishing to prevent ANOTHER illegal stocking. You want to blame somebody start there.
