Fish Lake this Weekend
#1
I'm braving the weather report for a Fish Lake trip this weekend.

I'd like to spend a little time fishing for everything as this is a bit of a prep trip for a longer trip I'm hosting in July.

Perch, Rainbows, Splake, Lakers are the key targets. If we get time I wouldn't mind trying to find some Kokanee or Tigers but not sure those are worth it yet.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

I couldn't keep the perch there off a mealworm on a shard darter jighead, through the ice. For an hour I was pulling one up every 2 minutes.

One piece of advice about Fish Lake perch, get a smaller fillet knife!

Edit: Oh yeah, the rainbows liked the mealworms too....and one little creepy freak of a lake trout. Pulled it out and recoiled a little, it had crooked stunted fins, a sideways underbite and its tail was twisted about 15 degrees to the lower left. It looked at me a burped, I pulled the hook out and dropped it back in. Seriously weird looking fish.

I will be there this weekend as well, fishing for all the same fish as MasterDaad. I’ve never fished the lake before, so any tips would be greatly appreciated.

I’m dragging my dad and two brothers along on the trip for what will hopefully be the first of many annual fishing trips together. My dad preferred Otter Creek, so I’m hoping that this trip will help convince him that Fish Lake was the better option.

We will be trolling, both long line and using down riggers. None of us have ever gone after Lake Trout or Splake before, so like I said, any tips would help.

Thanks!

I thought the DWR was going up this week to do a big perch removal? maybe you won't find any perch on the weekend. Wouldn't that be nice?!

That depends on what you are really targeting. If it's rainbows, then Otter Creek would be the better option. But if you want splake and lake trout, then the obvious choice is Fish Lake.

Where are they taking the perch? Back to Yuba?

Right before ice off we had real good success just outside the weed line 20-30 feet deep. Like the other post started catching perch, then got into the splake and a few bows. Splake ranged from 14-19 inches. The weed line was about 30-40' from shore. So if you have a way to get out there and drag along that line or jig you should have good success.

Thanks for the info PBH. We do plan on catching rainbows, but my brothers and I would like to branch out a little more. We've never caught Splake or Lake Trout, so the opportunity to give that a try, along with the beautiful scenery Fish Lake has to offer, made Fish Lake our destination of choice.

That's exactly what they're doing. I have to admit, it made me laugh to think about it, pulling fish out of a lake to drive them north in a big tank and drop them in a different lake. Makes sense though, earlier this year I was catching little 4 inch dink perch that had eggs in them! Also, if you look at the stocking report you'll notice they dropped the kokanee into FL about a month ago, along with some tigers that I'm sure will help control the perch. It's exciting to think about the size and quality of kokes and tigers we'll be pulling out of FL in a couple years.
