Devils Lake Fishing Reports
#1
1/16/04
Cold fronts and heavy holiday pressure resulted in tougher fishing conditions this past week. Anglers doing better than most are reporting they had to work hard and move a lot to find smaller more active groups of fish. The best spots this past week for perch have been Haybale Bay, the south end of Black Tiger, Skadsen’s, and the Stromme/Storm Sewer area. Hali’s, forage minnows, kastmasters, hanger rigs with ratso’s and ratfinkies, or a plain hook with a minnow were working the best. For bait, minnows, perch eyes, spikes, and wax worms all seem to work at times. Walleye fishing was slow as well this past week. The better spots were the trees in Dead Cow bay, Haybale, Rocky/Military Points, the trees along the old sand reef in Wolfords, and the north end of Six Mile Bay. For pike, Wolfords Bay, the north end of Six Mile Bay, Sweetwater/Morrison lakes, and Lake Irvin are all producing fish. Smelt, herring, sonars, or jigs with white twister tails are all working.

1/23/04
Cold fronts and winds have kept a lot of fisherman off the lake this past week and those making it out are reporting a rather tough bite. Those working hard and moving around are finding smaller groups of active perch and doing better than others. The better places continue to be the south end of Black Tiger Bay, Haybale Bay, the Main Bay by Camp Grafton, and the Towers area. Other spots producing some fish include the Woods Rutten, Stromme, and Swanson's Point areas. Anglers marking more fish in the 32-40 foot depths, but are reporting when they find fish in the 25 foot depths they tend to bite better. Anglers are using Hali's, Forage Minnows, Raps, hanger rigs, and genz worms tipped with wax worms, spikes, or minnow heads. Walleye fishing remains fair with fish being caught in Dead Cow Bay, Wolfords Bay, Military Point, Doc Hagen's, and in the Flats. Try working either in or along the edges of trees or rocky points. Sonar's, Raps, Buckshot Rattle Spoons, and Nils tipped with minnows or minnow heads are working the best. Pike continue to be caught in the north end of Six Mile Bay, Sweetwater/Morrison Lake, and Lake Irvin. We're also getting reports that the Churches Ferry area has really started to take off. Smelt or herring off tip-ups has been working the best. The Lake Access Committee is maintaining a trail system, but snow and winds are making them difficult to maintain. Heavy snow on the lake is making travel off the trails difficult even for four wheel drive vehicles. Good Luck and Good Fishing!!!
1/30/04
Extremely cold temps and last week’s heavy snowfall has kept most anglers off the lake this past week. While the temps look like they’ll be improving this coming week, mobility on the lake has been hampered as a result of this years heavy snowfall. The Lake Access Committee is committed to keeping the trail system open on the lake. Plowing contractor John Dahlen and his crew have been working hard and done an excellent job on getting the trails back open. Donations would be appreciated and can be dropped off or mailed to the Devils Lake Chamber/Tourism office. Prior to this past weeks cold weather and snow, perch fishing on the lake was fair. Anglers fishing Black Tiger, Skadsen’s, the Camp area near Military Point, and the corner of Camp and 57 were reporting fish. The key to doing better was moving around to find the more active schools. Hali’s, raps, forage minnows, hanger rigs, and genz worms tipped with wax worms, spikes, or minnow heads were working the best. Walleye fishing had been picking up with anglers reporting fish in the Rocky Point/Wolfords Bay area, Mission Bay, and the Doc Hagen area. Sonars, raps, nils, and buckshot rattle spoons tipped with minnows or minnow heads were the better producers. Pike fishing seems to have slowed some in the Sweetwater/Morrison area, but has picked up near Churches Ferry. Tip-ups with smelt or herring are working the best. This weekend the Devils Lake Fire Department will be having their Annual Ice Fishing Tournament. We wish the best of luck to all participants!!!

Woodland Resort/ Perch Patrol Fishing Report

Plows were able to get out on the lake and bust the trails back open. Right now, we have over 25 miles of open trails on the Lake. We have a trail going through Creel Bay from Woodland Resort to the Spirit Lake Casino with a trail branching off and going towards Bird Island. We also have a branch that goes from Rocky Point to the Towers area. East Bay has trails that run from Acorn Ridge to the Stromme Addition and a trail out from Hay Bale Bay. Black Tiger Bay has a Trail as well. Anglers are just starting to get out fishing again. There are a few reports of anglers picking up perch around the Towers Area, Rocky Point and the Dome House. Anglers are finding perch in anywhere from 32 to 36 feet of water. Anglers are using flourescent or glow in the dark Halis, Forage Minnows, Genz Worms and Hanger Rigs tipped with spikes, wax worms and minnow heads. A few walleyes have been coming off Rocky Point in deep water during the day and up on top of the bar towards evening. Anglers are using Buck Shot Rattle Spoons, Jigging Raps and Swedish Pimples tipped with a minnow head. Pike fishing remains good up at Churches Ferry and anglers are using smelt or herring below tip ups. Good Luck Fishing.
2/6/04
After heavy snows and cold temps anglers were finally making it back on the lake this past week. With the help of the public trail system and the plowing of additional trails by numerous individuals, fisherman are once again being able to move around on the lake. When off the trails, snow cover is heavy and travel very limited. Anglers were reporting perch being caught in Black Tiger, Skadsen’s, Haybale, Camp Grafton, and near the Towers. Hali’s, raps, hanger rigs, and genz worms tipped with spikes, waxworms, minnow heads, or perch eyes have been the better presentations. Reports from walleye fisherman indicate a good bite this past week. Areas producing fish include the 57 bridge area, Rocky Point, Walfords, and Doc Hagens. Sonars, buckshot rattle spoons, chubby darters, nils, and raps tipped with minnow heads have all been working. Pike are being caught in Sweetwater/Morrison, the north end of Six Mile, and Walfords Bay. Smelt or herring fished with tip-ups is the most popular presentation. Good Luck and Good Fishing!!!
2/13/04
Heavy snow on the lake continues to hamper fishing activities on Devils Lake. While the local Public Access Committee and individuals are clearing trails on the lake, the ability to move around to find fish is still hampered. Anglers wanting the ability to move around will find getting off the trails is next to impossible. Snowmobiles are recommended for these folks. As for fishing, perch fishing has been rather tough. Anglers are finding a few fish in Skadsens, Haybale, and the area from the mouth of Creel to along Camp Grafton. Hali's, hanger rigs, and genz worms tipped with waxworms, spikes, perch eyes, or minnow heads are working the best. Walleye fishing on the other hand has been fairly good with the better areas being the 57 bridge area, Rocky Point, Walfords Bay, and the Doc Hagen area. Buckshot rattle spoons, chubby darters, sonars, raps, and nils tipped with minnow heads are all working at times. Pike fishing remains somewhat slow with fish being caught in Walfords, the north end of Six Mile, and near Churches Ferry. Good Luck and Good Fishing!!!

Fishing on Devils Lake continues to be somewhat hampered by heavy snows on the lake. However, trails are starting to improve as many individuals have been creating their own trails in addition to those maintained by the Public Access Committee. As for perch fishing, results have been mixed. Some anglers are reporting fair catches while others are struggling. This past week anglers were finding perch in Black Tiger Bay, Skadsens, East Bay out from the 20 bridge, and the mouth of Creel Bay. Hali's, hanger rigs, and genz worms tipped with spikes, waxworms, minnows, or perch eyes have all been catching fish at times. Walleye fishing continues to be quite good. Anglers are finding fish in Mission Bay, the 57 Bridge area, Wolfords Bay, Rocky Point, and Doc Hagens. Buckshot rattle spoons, nils, raps, and sonars have been the most popular lures. Pike fishing remains fair with fish being caught in the north end of Six Mile Bay and the Mauvee Coulee near Churches Ferry. Smelt, herring, or jigs with white tails have all been producing fish. Good Luck & Good Fishing!!

Snow continues to hamper the fishing on Devils Lake . However, warmer temps, the trail system, and individual trails are improving access. We do ask anglers to not drill holes on the trails. For perch the south end of Black Tiger, Skadsen's, the Rocky Point area, and the Towers area are all producing some fish. Hali's, hanger rigs, raps, and genz worms tipped with wax worms, spikes, minnows, or perch eyes have been the better bets. Walleye fishing continues to be quite good. The 57 & 20 bridge areas, Mission Bay , Rocky Point, and Wolfords are all producing nice fish. Anglers are using buckshot rattle spoons, nils, raps, sonars, & chubby darters. Pike fishing has been really hot in the Churches Ferry area. Smelt, herring, or jigs w/white tails are all producing fish. Good Luck & Good Fishing!!!
