This is a bit late, my apologies. But figure late is better than never!
From the 17-20, I was up at the Flaming Gorge Resort. I was up there writing about the Gorge for On The Fly Magazine, and shooting an episode of my fly fishing show, so even though it was a fishing trip, it was a "work" trip too.
I get the opportunity to do these kinds of things a lot, and it's actually surprising how different a working trip feels from a recreational one. I still get to fish all day long, but the emphasis is on bigger fish (Fish Porn, as the kids call it these days) and making sure we're getting the right shots for the show and magazine stills. It can get exhausting.
Anyways - the trip was incredible. My guide Kevin Clegg (part-owner of Flaming Gorge Resort) was the best I've ever fished with. Without him, there's no way we would have got into as many fish as we did. We floated the river for two days, and I caught more than enough fish to make any fisherman happy.
A true "monster" eluded us but I snagged a couple bows that were really good sized, and a 20" inch brown on the last cast of the day.
A quick funny story about a bow I caught - we were about a half-mile down from Little Hole. Our driftboat was on the right side of the river, and I was fishing the middle run. We came around a bend and there was a driftboat from a rival guide shop anchored on the opposite bank. They weren't fishing, just looked like they were taking a quick water and lunch break. Anyways, as soon as we drew even with them, a fish took the dropper off my cicada. It shot straight over to the other boat, jumped about 3 feet out of the water, and sprinkled a light showering of water on the guys in the other boat. I thought it was hilarious.
We also got out on the res for some kokanee. My good friend Ryan Mosley took me out on his boat, and we got plenty of kokes, plus a lake trout and some bows. Then we went throwing for smallies, and I managed to find a pretty good 13ish-inch smallie!
It was a GREAT trip. Once the video we made up there is finished, I'll let y'all know if you're interested in seeing it.
