Green River White Water Rafting
#1
Hey Crew,
Posted about 2 weeks back stating i was doing this trip on this and Colorado's forum asking for some insight on what to use and well, you guys rocked on what to use.

We caught 3 Pike Minnows, which are endangered, using Rapala's black and gold, also perch colored. 2 were between 16-22 inches while the other, damn... was pushing 34". Landing a ~34" pike minnow while floating on a raft is not an easy task!!!! Very exciting for the Angler and the rest of our crew. Best part about it, while we're taking pics and unhooking the monster, a family of longhorn sheep were watching on the bank 15' away.

Also caught some large carp while messing around at various camp sites upwards of 20". Beautiful for the fish they are! Nice and golden!

Using some red devils i was able to catch about 15 or so brown trout at various spots as well.

Smallmouth bass were plentiful as well, being an invasive species in that stretch, it's our obligation to kill them once landed. We landed quite a bit and slayed a bunch as well.

If any of you get a chance to go out to Jones Hole, i'd recommend you do! There is a small creek that feeds into the Green, which is crystal clear, that has some amazing holes! You can literally watch the fish chase your fly, spinner or debate about your bait for as long as you want. You can sit and watch 8" fish follow your gear to upwards of some damn smart trout about 18-24" just watching fly right by their face.

All in all, some damn great fishing, rafting and good times!

I'll post some pics as soon as i get them from the rest of the group!

Wow! Your experience fishing there sounds far better than any I have had in that same stretch. I am normally there in the spring/early summer, so I am going to console myself with the belief that it is due to water levels instead of angler error.

About 20 years ago I fished from flaming gorge dam down to little hole and I would knock the Browns and rainbows silly up to 25in. All were caught on cd-5 gold and black rapalas.
Glad you had a good trip.

Gaardvark - I will say this was the most successful trip in regards to fishing anybody in our group has had with this section of hte Green. Some have floated it upwards of 8 times and haven't compared to this. If you're doing it early in the year, the run off i'm sure is quite a bit higher. We only had about 12-1300 CFS.

Last year we did this in hopes to have some great fishing, 2nd night we had a damn HUGE rainstorn that caused waterfalls on the canyon walls leading to the red rock leaving a damn RED RIVER for the GREEN RIVER!! The whole river was red due to sediment for hte rest of our trip. It was absolutely nuts how red it was and how long it lasted. Pretty neat waking up and having such a huge amount of running water change colors.

After that river changed colors, there was no use in fish. Visibility through the water was no greater than 2". The only fishing was Jones Holes Creek, which is near Jones Holes #1 campground. YOu can walk there from any of hte Jones Holes Campgrounds, but it's between #1 and #2. With the water red, when the creek entered the green river the confluence between the 2 bodies was a feeding frenzy. You could choose what fish you wanted with whatever bait it seemed like. We lost some of our group for hours, even through dinner, and no fishermen/women regretted their decision to miss the meal for some amazing fishing.
