Oregon Fishing Update
#1
Fisheries Update

March 8th - March 14, 2002

Columbia River sturgeon fishing is by far the best in the gorge. St. Helens is decent if you want good shaker action but limit fishing for keepers is the rule just upriver. Smelt are reported in the Columbia as high as the I-205 bridge. Springer action is poor on the Columbia but some sport fish are being taken in the lower river. The portion of 5-year olds to 4-year olds for Willamette fish is almost double so quality size is worth the wait. And speaking of worth the wait…

The Guide's Forecast Technical Report Series is finally done! Click on our link from https://secure.max.net/cgi-bin/sform/the...hrpt.shtml and order the technical reports that will help you catch more fish! We also have a very detailed report on what fisheries are going to be hot this year (tech report #19) so you can forecast when you want to take your vacations!

The Willamette River has slowed for springers as it usually does but will likely pick back up again in a few weeks. The upper Willamette tributaries are going to get good for the wild fish that are pouring over the falls. It is already starting to get good.

The Sandy and Clackamas have been only fair for steelhead but some quality summer run fish are starting to show. Smelt may be showing up any day in the Sandy River! These rivers spiked temporarily on 3/6 but were fishable again by 3/7 due to low snow levels.

The coastal streams are polluted with steelhead if you employ low water tactics. Between the Nehalem and Wilson Rivers, we boated 19 fish over the last 3 days- see our full length version for more details. The Siletz has slowed a bit but should pick back up when the water levels rise a bit- this is true for all coastal systems. While the tides will be mild over the weekend, crabbing has been slow in the bays. Not so offshore, when weather has allowed, with jumbo ocean Dungeness available as well as willing rockfish and an occasional ling cod. Trout will be or have been stocked in Cape Mears Lake, Coffenbury Lake, Cullaby Lake, Hebo Lake, Lost Lake (Clatsop County), Lytle Lake, North Lake, Smith Lake, South Lake, Spring Lake, Sunset Lake, Tahoe Lake, Town Lake, Vernonia Lake, St. Louis Ponds and Willamina Pond. E.E. Wilson Pond (Adair) and Junction City Pond are scheduled to be stocked this week with legal and 'larger sized trout.'

Subscribe now by clicking over to
http//www.theguidesforecast.com/signup.html

Get more Oregon fishing information at
http://www.theguidesforecast.com
