Small lakes or rivers in SE Utah to fish by un-powered inflatable?
#1
Hi.

I am doing an epic roadie that goes from Denver to SE Utah to Grand Canyon possibly to Vegas (big maybe) through Arizona to New Mexico. With me will be an 11' inflatable in the trunk. Won't bring motor and battery as that's too heavy.

I come from very far away so I have no idea how the fishing is. I typically fish for bass and pike but I'm pretty open to anything (though I don't fly fish) as fishing is not the main objective of this trip. I will also have waders with me.

The fiance will be joining me and is willing to spend 3 hours on a boat. So no spending an entire day on the water like I am prone to doing back home.

As we are improvising so much of this trip, I have no idea where I will be staying or which areas I can stop by and fish. But, I would love to have some ideas in case I do have some time to spend in the area.

Are there any small/calm lakes and rivers you can point me to in SE Utah really close to the 191? And what species I can expect?

Please PM me if that is better.

I am taking this route and don't want to deviate too much from it as it's already a lot of driving:

Thanks for any suggestions.

You'll be pretty close to Lake Powell, which has all sorts of great warm water fishing (including, I believe Stripers, or Wipers, I forget which), and panfish. I believe there are also quagga mussels though so you'll probably have to decon your inflatable when you leave.

Recapture reservoir is right off 191 between blanding and Monticello Utah. Its low but has fish in it. The Colorado is near Moab too. Have fun. It sounds like a great trip

I would recommend taking Hi-way 128 from I-70 to Moab. The road takes you along the Colorado River and by some of the country that some of the old westerns were filmed. It's a paved road but will take a little longer than going over to Hi-way 191. Very scenic country.

There is a small reservoir just south of Moab called Ken's Lake. It has some trout, bass, and who knows what else in there.

Have a safe and fun trip!

Welcome to BFT! As said follow 128. It goes right down next to the Colorado and ends in Moab. You have been given pretty much all the places along that route. Once in Arizona just south of the Grand Canyon down by Williams there are a couple of small lakes. These do have trout in them as well as bass and crappie. Santa Fe reservoir and cataract as well as a few others. Here is my a link to my report from earlier this year.

Just west of Monticello are two small lakes (Foy and Monticello) They have good fly fishing for small rainbow and tiger trout. Paved road to both.

Second the vote for Ken's Lake. Good fishing and the wind usually isn't too bad.
