I've been hitting the Lower Provo at every available opportunity for the past few weeks, trying to take advantage of the Caddis hatch.
Finally found a rig that really slayed them this morning. I believe in sharing the love, so I'll just spit it out. I had a Kastmaster rigged directly to my main line (4 lb mono) with an 18 inch leader coming off the hook that led to a size 10 gold beadhead olive woolly bugger. This allowed me to cast wherever I wanted despite the wind and still use a fly for my main lure.
I was only on the water for about 45 minutes, but I had a bite on about every other cast. Hooked into a couple of smallish browns, and finally a big fat rainbow (first I've ever hooked on the Lower Provo, it's always been just browns for me). Pound for pound, this rainbow had more fight than any fish I've ever had on the line. He jumped completely out of the water 3 different times and went on a bunch of big long runs where he stripped a bunch of my line back off my drag. An epic fight which,
ly, ended up with him snapping my line above the bugger.
So there's your ticket if you're looking for some good times on the Lower Provo. No shy bites here, every strike was like the lure had personally insulted the fish's mother. Not a single bite on the Kastmaster either, they wanted the streamer every time. Go for a smallish olive bugger with something heavy to give you casting distance.
Lost my last olive bugger on a snag and I had to get to class anyway, so I headed home. This afternoon I bought some supplies and tied a bunch of new copies of the bugger in the same color, so hopefully tomorrow I can replicate my success
