The Berry ... Algae and PB&J ... 10/23
#1
[#800000]Curtis (LuvThemCuts) and I made an early run to the Berry today. We were fishing Renegade by 7:30. By 11:00 we had boated about 30 slot cuts. Then the switch went off for us and we only caught another 5 or so fish the whole afternoon until we called it a day at 3:00.

The bite was good out east of the Renegade marina until the moss and algae got supper thick. In a previous post, I disagreed with someone about the algae slowing the bite. But now I kind of have to agree. At first the algae wasn't bad. But then all of a sudden it was THICK!

The water temps stayed around 53° to 55° all day.

I tried catching fish using hard plastic crank baits but never got a single bite with them. Everything came in on white tube jigs tipped with chub and slathered with Pro-Cure Anchovy fish attractant.

Curt brought a loaf of bread and some peanut butter and jelly to make himself some sandwiches. But he forgot to bring a knife to spread the peanut butter with. He didn't want to use his fingers with all the chub and Pro-Cure on them. He didn't want to use my fillet knife. He watched me eat a couple of my famous delicious Spam, cheese, and jalapeno sandwiches and he was getting kind of desperate for something to spread his peanut butter with. He broke down and used the package that one of my new Yo-Zuri lures came in. Apparently, it worked pretty good.

At least we got some good results from the lure package because I sure didn't get any results from the lure itself.

I still think that the really good fall fishing is still in the future. Maybe a couple more weeks … middle of November.

That's the best and first advice/report for sandwich making options combined with fishing Renegade I've ever read. I vote for you guys to win the Rod and Reel contest! I hope to have as much fun if I can get up there on Sunday. Thanks for the report!

I always recommend that one first gets a good idea on what should go in a good spam sandwich by reviewing a recommended YouTube before proceeding:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anwy2MPT5RE

Once your good and familiar with what goes into a spam sandwich, then it's time to put it all together.

I like my spam fried. My wife requires that I fry it outside on the patio to keep the smell outside. I prefer the 25% less salt type Spam. Both sides of the bread get mayo. Some good mustard on one side and some sharp chedar cheese on the other. Two thick slices of fried spam side-by-side then some lettuce.

If you put the samiches in a baggie, then when it's time to eat them, you can hold them without touching the bread. Wouldn't want to get chub guts and smelly jelly from your fingers on that fantastic sandwich creation.

Man, this has got my mouth watering. Think I'll go make myself one right now!

EDIT: And a THICK layer of jalapenos. Man Rocky ... how did I ever forget the jalapenos.

We also went to strawberry on the 23rd, fish the meadows. We did quite well on Pearl tube jigs fresh chub. we got 84. That's between two of us, was hot action all day pretty constant. We cast the tube jig out let it sink to the bottom let it sit for 1 to 2 minutes, lift it up and slowly retrieve it back they would always hit it right after you lifted it off the bottom. I think they would see it and watch it on the bottom and then the second you moved it BAM. We also caught up about twenty nice rainbows on PowerBait early in the morning. Then the rainbow just turned it off about 10 1030. It was a good day, my arm got tired of casting and reeling in good size fish. No slot busters. Minowes didn't do as well as the fresh chub.

That sounds like and absolutely fantastic tactic! I will definitely be trying that next time.

Thanks for that great idea!

I was over there too. I couldn't catch a thing on the tubes but was killing them under a bobber. I totally agree that the fall bite is yet to come.

[#0000BF]The great fall fishing has already started. Just need to be willing to change tactics and being lucky in finding the fish doesn't hurt either.[/#0000BF]

I guess I'd better chime in on Old_Coot's 'fish story'...

I had an absolute BLAST. Such a great time fishing and pulling in all those cutts.

One thing that I didn't see mentioned is the Crawdads.. aka cray fish, craw fish, or whatever you want to call those miniature lobster thingies that live on the floor of Strawberry Reservoir.

They feel EXACTLY like a cutthroat nibbling gently on your tube jig.. I kept jerking at bites and not setting the hook. Ralph told me that there must be crawdads down there nibbling but I had trouble believing that they would tug like they did.

So, he had me reel in really slowly at the next 'bite'. I did so, and watched my line, and sure enough, there was a big 5 inch crawdad on the end of it. They drop off immediately when they break the surface of the water, but they are certainly down there.

So one strategy I learned is that the fish were on the very very bottom. I would drop my tube jig to the very bottom until the line went slack, then I'd reel in just about 6 inches so it was off the bottom. That's where I got my bites.

The crawdads would grab the tube jig if it was too close to the bottom, but the fish took it when it was up about 6 inches from the bottom of the lake.

The crawdads were thickest in that bay directly to the north and west of the Renegade ramp.

And yes, the story of the peanut butter being spread with a plastic Rappalla case is 100% true. I had to use my creative skills, but the thing worked pretty good, and the samiches were GREAT !!!

Old_Coot is a blast to fish with. My compliments on the excellent organization and efficiency of his boat. He runs a nice tight ship that's for sure.

Thanks for the trip Ralph, it was GREAT !!!

"My compliments on the excellent organization and efficiency of his boat."

[#0000FF]I was also impressed, the first time I joined Coot on a trip for Bear Lake whitefish. He proudly showed me his checklist...for loading, unloading, prepping, launch, return cleanup, etc. Only problem was, he left the checklist on his workbench while we tooled up the road to Bear Lake. The good news is that everything went well...and he didn't leave the plug out of the boat while launching.

I pride myself on organization but I have to bow to the Cootster. He got it goin' on.
