Halloween candy strawberry
#1
With winter approaching I will be moving my operation to Quail Creek and Sand Hollow, but I hadn't fished Strawberry once this year in spite of the fact my organization kept a boat there all year and fished nearly every day with disabled veterans and children with disabilities.
It was cold and windy, but old men prefer to troll anyways so we tied big black leech patterns called Red eyed Phyllises on the fly rods loaded with sinking lines and commenced trolling.
We were not even a block away from the Strawberry bay marina when we started picking up fish. By 3:00PM we had brought 17 to the net and had twice that many short strikes in spite of the fact that the streamers were tied with stinger hooks.
The fast action came in the narrows. The marabou and bucktail streamers caught fish after fish including a 27" cutthroat that weighted exactly 8 lbs. I killed the fish to have it mounted to be placed on the specie wall at the camp we are building at Flaming Gorge for disabled combat veterans.

I probably wont get to Strawberry again this year, but it produced some great memories,

Great Fish! I was about to post a pic of my personal best from Strawberry... a 24" 5lb-er but he's WIMPY by comparison.

That's a beast! Thanks for sharing it!

Wow happy Halloween to you, what a toad.

Wonder how old it was?

Not too many that size are reported, nice catch it'll make an awesome mount and better yet years of story telling.

As an old mans memory is prone to fail or even be accurate, with reflection in over 50 years fishing strawberry I have only caught 4 or 5 cutthroat and about that many rainbow over 5 pounds. I have wondered many times where the giant fish were and why I couldn't catch one. When a good fish, a truly good fish comes along I rejoice in the opportunity to have it on the end of my line.
Such was the case with this fish. After tens of thousands of slot cutthroat are release to grow each year, wouldn't you think that more trophys would be caught? A mystery to me. It seems that the majority of true trophy fish are caught through the ice as is the case of northern pike. Strange, but only an old mans reflection and observation. I am just damn glad to catch one more before my fishing days are over. Steve
