Otter Creek Ice Island
#1
Went to Otter Creek Saturday. Showed up at 8:30 but the the location of desired of fishing was not possible. There was about 10 feet of open water then another 20 or so feet of thin ice before the edge of the thick ice. This of course varied and after going to a more steep slope we used about an 8' plank to access the ice. The ice was about 9-11 inches thick still. Fishing was a little slow but we caught a couple. My boy caught a nice bow, he yelled "Dad I am stuck on the ice" His tune changed when the ice started to pull his poll down from the head shakes. Didn't seem to matter the lure but tipping it with power bait was the key. It was awesome weather 50 and no wind. I will guess this will be the last week of fishable ice. By saturday shore fishing will most likely be an option looking at the forecast. Maybe even sooner. Be safe.

I believe we were the crazy buggers that was searching for a solution about how to get on the ice when you showed up to save the day! Thanks for letting us use your plank and being prepared!

I did see a couple of guys to north casting out but I think it had to do with the fact they couldn't access the ice. Where we were at though it would have been pretty shallow to shore fish. If you message the Otter Creek State Park on facebook or just give them a call they are good to get back to you.

No Problem! I am glad you guys were there cause I was debating just heading home or to a new spot. When I had left that morning I looked at my hip boots and thought I should take them. Did things pick up after we left?

Does anyone know if they allow camping around the lake. Like the west side of the lake

either that, or those other guys realized that the rainbows would be cruising the shorline getting ready to spawn!

10 feet of open water? I think I'd have been casting in that open water too!

Looks like you had a good day. Thanks for the report.

Yes that is true. I watched for a bit for fish cruisers but where we were at was very shallow at 10 ft is was only 6-8" approx. Where we did access the ice though on the steep slope my waders wouldn't have saved me from getting wet. I am sure this week would be good for cruisers too bad I won't be able to get down that way.
