Friday Saturday fished with a group of 8. Strawberry mud Creek 75% open water. Between us and another dozen or so I saw no one catch anything. Chicken Creek, Jakes have some open areas. The Ladders has open water, and a few open places between there anD sage Creek, which is now open water also. Soldier Creek is open along West shore with 20+ yards pull back about the whole length. Saw some fishing at dam. We caught nothing with power bait or chub meat. Got blustery with blowing snow and sunshine. Left early.
Ice off at the Berry is way overrated.
True that. I've had much better days in the late Fall.
If you ask me, Strawberry itself is totally overrated. I'm just glad it's there and keeps folks away from better spots.

I agree that Ice off sometimes doesn't live up to expectations. But in my 20 years of fishing ice off I have hit it perfect a handful of times and the fishing was incredible. I'll keep chasing ice off for another chance at it .

Totally agree! That and the "walleye run" at Utah Lake are the 2 most overrated fishing events in the state.
What I've noticed at Strawberry ice out is that skilled, knowledgeable anglers catch lots of fish, the unskilled don't, and those in the middle get a few. (Just like the rest of the year)

Gotta agree here. There are times when Ice off isn't banner fishing. A low pressure system/rising barometer from a low system, seems to affect it as much as any other time of the year. On the other hand if conditions are right, such as they were last week, things can be off the hook. I am personally a fly fishing enthusiast and it has been my favorite time of year for the past decade or so. That being said, I don't fish Strawberry, I live farther south. It has been my experience here however that this can be the most productive time of year. In my opinion the rainbows don't fight as hard in the cold water but the cutties seem to fight harder.

If the chances of nice 'bows were better I would visit the place more often. I totally understand the concept of needing the cutts to eat chubs, but it creates a boring fishery IMO. Just not my "cup-o-tea".

totally concur - once in awhile, if you hit it just as the ice is peeling back, you can really get into em, but most of the times its fair to middling at best. I've seen some really good fishermen skunked at ice off. + one on what the other poster says about the UL 'walleye run", aint no such thing.

So just clarifying, As of 2 days ago, Strawberry was 75% melted?
It should now be all the way melted right?
Is it completely safe to boat on now?
Any dangers of ice chunks in the middle of the lake or anything like that?
Has the marina put out their docks yet?
Just don't want to get out there and turn my boat into the Titanic.. And turn myself into a floating icicle...
Looking forward to MANY days on the Berry !!!
See you up there...

My understanding of that first post is that it's 75% open from the shore angler's perspective. He said that the ice was 20 yards from the shore in places, so that means that the big iceberg that floats around the center of Strawberry for a couple weeks is probably still there.

That was the other question.. How long does the big iceburg stay out there? I thought it only stayed for a few days before it all melted off, but I could be mistaken. Has anybody been out there today?
