Willard 5-5-16 fish on!
#1
A buddy asked me to take him out to chase some wipers. I told him that Thursday looked like the perfect conditions after a few warm days. So we headed out of the south marina in the evening. The bugs joined us for the first half hour or so. But when the wipers are biting the bugs are just an after thought. The wind was not bad and just a sprinkle of rain for 5 minutes. We trolled the entire time. Ended the night with 9 wipers boated in an hour and a half. I Was trying to get some walleye to join me on the boat but no luck... All fish were put back after finding out he did not want to take them home for dinner. We both thought the other one wanted them haha. Now I have another buddy hooked on the wiper fishing, you can never have too many fishing buddies. [Smile] Now if the weather would just cooperate for more than a couple of days per week life would be just dandy!

Sounds like you had a better day than most others out there! I didn't have a chance to get out this week, hopefully they'll still be biting tomorrow! Mind sharing if you went East or West out of the South Marina? Trying to put a game plan together for tomorrow morning...lol

Kevin - I couldn't see a picture (0mb?) but sounds like you did very well. What a funny predicament you found yourself in too! No you cant have too many fishing buddies - we've had to learn Willard via practice and trial and error.

Thanks for your report.

May I ask, and you can say no, what worked best, and where? I really have trouble with the where, as all my old spots seem to be in limbo?

Uintahman I don't mind sharing what works for me. The only caveat is that I have fished Willard twice in one day and on consecutive days at the same time and place and what worked before definitely didn't work again. With that being said I mainly troll and head to the last producing spot. I will only stay in that area if the fish are biting. Some will stay because they are marking fish and I can understand the allure to keep trying but that doesn't usually work for me. The inverse is also my rule that once they are biting I stay in that area until the bite turns off. I start out pulling 3-4 different lures and once a lure gets 2 hits I will switch out lures to the producing lure. I use a variety of berkley and rapallas. Right now I am using size 5's. Lately I have not been using planning boards because the fish are biting before I can get them set up. Once they get a little more picky I will start using them again. As far as where I go it is all of the usual places, freeway bay, island, pig farm, light pole ect... One trick that has payed dividends is my small cheap gps I use it for both trolling speed and also I will mark hook ups. Then I go back and look for any patterns. This is how I found what I call wiper triangle. It is literally a triangle shape of waypoints on my gps. Without my gps, that I have left home by accident before, I couldn't find it. There are no real identifying land marks or depths in/on the water and trolling just outside of the waypoints I find the bite is significantly lower if not all together nonexistent. So that is my .02 on fishing Willard. Your mileage may vary. There are many others that are much better fishermen than I am. Hopefully they will be open with what works for them. I am grateful to Old Coot as he was willing to help me many years ago and gave me a lesson on Willard at the north marina ramp. I still use his pointers to this day. There are too many others to list that have helped on this forum. So please keep sharing info and that way we can all enjoy the sport and Willard Bay.

Thanks for the info, really like your last producing spot theory, as well as lure strategy. I've been using Rapala Originals, #5's as well lately.

Probably go Thursday, headed for wipers. Only one problem I got a darn walleye fisherman in the boat, that only spells trouble. But he is really really good. Maybe a compromise.

Thanks a bunch, I'll let you know what worked as always.
