Insulated Fishbag Over A Hard Cooler?!
#1
A few months ago i acquired an insulated backpack fishing bag from Charley's Fishing Supply in downtown, Honolulu Hawaii. This was labeled as a "Sm" DaKine Ulua bag. There were bigger sizes available but for my type of mobile fishing i thought that even this 26" x 19" insulated bag would be to much. Actually it was perfect.

Months of climbing lava boulders to coral reef benches & sandy beach stretches has proven to me how light-weight & useful this bag truly is. One night when the waves were hitting +20ft (yeah, us anglers aren't that smart at times) i found this bag can be a floatation device as well (must hug the bag to your chest with your arms in the straps otherwise it'll float you face down). On rock, reef or sand it makes a comfy pillow to a seat cushion as well.

Because insulated packs have little to no air spaces the "coldness" of the ice lasts longer as less airspace means minimal loss of "coldness". Food, drinks, and fish are kept properly chilled. If you are lucky enough to catch a fish bigger then the bag you can bury it in the cool moist sand slightly higher then the high tide mark (make sure to mark the site with a stick). When your ready place the fish head down & backpack it out. I have a small garbage bag to wrap it first. Or you can fillet it there.

The front storage pocket was much bigger then i first thought. The pocket flaps with twin clips extend higher then the bag height itself! I'm a big guy but found the adjustable straps easy to conform to any fit. The zipper is heavy duty, the type found on top notch dive suits. After months of fishing abuse over lava rocks, reef and harsh sun with salt conditions i found no abrasions or loose stitching. I can only rate this bag as the best fishing backpack i've ever used.

Interesting, how much does one of those small ones cost and how much ice do you need to put in it to keep the fish cool? Thanks for the info Chris.

For this size i use 5 regular water bottles that i freeze (got to empty a little water out then slightly collapse the bottle before freezing).
